* docs-rst: add inter-document cross referencesMauro Carvalho Chehab2016-09-211-2/+5
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | Add cross references for the development process documents that were converted to ReST: Documentation/SubmitChecklist Documentation/SubmittingDrivers Documentation/SubmittingPatches Documentation/development-process/development-process.rst Documentation/stable_kernel_rules.txt Signed-off-by: Mauro Carvalho Chehab <mchehab@s-opensource.com> Acked-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@linuxfoundation.org> Signed-off-by: Jonathan Corbet <corbet@lwn.net>
* Documentation/HOWTO: add cross-references to other documentsMauro Carvalho Chehab2016-09-211-0/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | Add cross references for the documents mentioned at HOWTO and are under the Documentation/ directory, using the ReST notation. It should be noticed that HOWTO also mentions the /README file. We opted to not touch it, for now, as making it build on Sphinx would require it to be moved to a Documentation/foo directory. * Documentation/stable_kernel_rules.txt: convert it to ReST markupMauro Carvalho Chehab2016-09-211-33/+68
| | | | | | | | | | | - use ReST markups for section headers; - add cross-references to the options; - mark code blocks; - a few minor changes to make Sphinx happy. * stable_kernel_rules.txt: Remove extra space after Cc:Richard Weinberger2015-11-211-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | Fixes the checkpatch.pl warning: "WARNING: Use a single space after Cc:" Very lazy hackers just copy&paste the stable tag from this document. As it contains an extra space, checkpatch.pl will not like the resulting patch... Signed-off-by: Richard Weinberger <richard@nod.at> Signed-off-by: Jonathan Corbet <corbet@lwn.net>
* stable: Update documentation to clarify preferred procedureChristoffer Dall2015-05-221-5/+14
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | Clearly specify that "Cc: stable@vger.kernel.org" is strongly preferred so that developers understand that the other options should only be used when absolutely required. Also specify how upstream commit ids should be referenced in patches submitted directly to stable (I gathered this from looking at the stable archives), and specify that any modified patches for stable should be clearly documented in the patch description. * stable_kernel_rules: reorganize and update submission optionsBrian Norris2015-01-121-10/+34
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The current organization of Documentation/stable_kernel_rules.txt doesn't clearly differentiate the mutually exclusive options for submission to the -stable review process. As I understand it, patches are not actually required to be mailed directly to stable@vger.kernel.org, but the instructions do not make this clear. Also, there are some established processes that are not listed -- specifically, what I call Option 2 below. This patch updates and reorganizes a bit, to make things clearer. * stable_kernel_rules: Add pointer to netdev-FAQ for network patchesDave Chiluk2014-07-101-0/+3
| | | | | | | | | | Stable_kernel_rules should point submitters of network stable patches to the netdev_FAQ.txt as requests for stable network patches should go to netdev first. * stable: Allow merging of backports for serious user-visible performance issuesMel Gorman2012-06-251-0/+6
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Distribution kernel maintainers routinely backport fixes for users that were deemed important but not "something critical" as defined by the rules. To users of these kernels they are very serious and failing to fix them reduces the value of -stable. The problem is that the patches fixing these issues are often subtle and prone to regressions in other ways and need greater care and attention. To combat this, these "serious" backports should have a higher barrier to entry. This patch relaxes the rules to allow a distribution maintainer to merge to -stable a backported patch or small series that fixes a "serious" user-visible performance issue. They should include additional information on the user-visible bug affected and a link to the bugzilla entry if available. The same rules about the patch being already in mainline still apply. * stable: update documentation to ask for kernel versionGreg Kroah-Hartman2012-01-241-1/+2
| | | | | | | | | It would save me an email round-trip asking which stable tree(s) that a patch should be applied to, so document that the tree number should be specified in the email request. Reported-by: Tomoya MORINAGA <tomoya.rohm@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@suse.de>
* Update email address for stable patch submissionJosh Boyer2011-10-181-7/+7
| | | | | | | | | | | The stable@kernel.org email address has been replaced with the stable@vger.kernel.org mailing list. Change the stable kernel rules to reference the new list instead of the semi-defunct email alias. * Documentation: -stable rules: upstream commit ID requirement rewordedStefan Richter2010-04-231-5/+4
| | | | | | | | | | | | It is a hard requirement to include the upstream commit ID in the changelog of a -stable submission, not just a courtesy to the stable team. This concerns only mail submission though, which is no longer the only way into stable. (Also, fix a double "the".) * Doc/stable rules: add new cherry-pick logicSebastian Andrzej Siewior2009-12-231-2/+22
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | - it is possible to submit patches for the stable queue without sending them directly stable@kernel.org. If the tag (Cc: stable@kernel.org) is available in the sign-off area than hpa's script will filter them into the stable mailbox once it hits Linus' tree. - Patches which require others to be applied first can be also specified. * Fix "can not" in Documentation and KconfigMatt LaPlante2006-10-031-2/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | Randy brought it to my attention that in proper english "can not" should always be written "cannot". I donot see any reason to argue, even if I mightnot understand why this rule exists. This patch fixes "can not" in several Documentation files as well as three Kconfigs.
