The modern interface is almost identical to the old one, except instead of the page pointer it takes a "struct vm_special_mapping" that describes the mapping (and contains the page pointer as one member), and it returns the resulting 'vma' instead of just the error code. Getting rid of the old interface also gets rid of some special casing, which had caused problems with the mremap extensions to "struct vm_special_mapping". | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The uapi/asm/unistd_32.h and asm/syscall_table_32.h headers can now be generated from scripts/syscall.tbl, which makes this consistent with the other architectures that have their own syscall.tbl. csky has two architecture specific system calls, which I add to the generic table. The time32, stat64 and rlimit entries in the syscall_abis_32 line are for system calls that were part of the generic ABI when arch/csky got added but are no longer enabled by default for new architectures. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Most architectures that implement the old-style mmap() with byte offset use 'unsigned long' as the type for that offset, but microblaze and riscv have the off_t type that is shared with userspace, matching the prototype in include/asm-generic/syscalls.h. Make this consistent by using an unsigned argument everywhere. This changes the behavior slightly, as the argument is shifted to a page number, and an user input with the top bit set would result in a negative page offset rather than a large one as we use elsewhere. For riscv, the 32-bit sys_mmap2() definition actually used a custom type that is different from the global declaration, but this was missed due to an incorrect type check. It is merely a convention without any functional difference. In fact, $(obj) and $(src) are exactly the same, as defined in scripts/Makefile.build: src := $(obj) When the kernel is built in a separate output directory, $(src) does not accurately reflect the source directory location. While Kbuild resolves this discrepancy by specifying VPATH=$(srctree) to search for source files, it does not cover all cases. For example, when adding a header search path for local headers, -I$(srctree)/$(src) is typically passed to the compiler. This introduces inconsistency between upstream and downstream Makefiles because $(src) is used instead of $(srctree)/$(src) for the latter. To address this inconsistency, this commit changes the semantics of $(src) so that it always points to the directory in the source tree. Going forward, the variables used in Makefiles will have the following meanings: $(obj) - directory in the object tree $(src) - directory in the source tree (changed by this commit) $(objtree) - the top of the kernel object tree $(srctree) - the top of the kernel source tree Consequently, $(srctree)/$(src) in upstream Makefiles need to be replaced with $(src). Eventually, the ftrace_ops associated with the kprobes will be freed, yet the kprobes will still be active, and when triggered, they will use the freed memory, likely resulting in a page fault and panic. This behavior can be reproduced quite easily, by creating a kprobe and then triggering a ftrace_kill(). For simplicity, we can simulate an ftrace error with a kernel module like [1]: [1]: https://github.com/brenns10/kernel_stuff/tree/master/ftrace_killer sudo perf probe --add commit_creds sudo perf trace -e probe:commit_creds # In another terminal make sudo insmod ftrace_killer.ko # calls ftrace_kill(), simulating bug # Back to perf terminal # ctrl-c sudo perf probe --del commit_creds After a short period, a page fault and panic would occur as the kprobe continues to execute and uses the freed ftrace_ops. While ftrace_kill() is supposed to be used only in extreme circumstances, it is invoked in FTRACE_WARN_ON() and so there are many places where an unexpected bug could be triggered, yet the system may continue operating, possibly without the administrator noticing. If ftrace_kill() does not panic the system, then we should do everything we can to continue operating, rather than leave a ticking time bomb. There were some hacks to make that work, but the behavior was surprising as do_idle() doesn't expect an offlined CPU to return from the dead (in arch_cpu_idle_dead()). Now that Xen has been fixed, and the arch-specific implementations of arch_cpu_idle_dead() also don't return, give it a __noreturn attribute. This will cause the compiler to complain if an arch-specific implementation might return. It also improves code generation for both caller and callee. For this the VDSO build validates that the resulting .so file does not have any relocations which are specified via $(ARCH_REL_TYPE_ABS) per architecture, which is fragile as e.g. ARM64 lacks an entry for R_AARCH64_RELATIVE. Aside of that ARCH_REL_TYPE_ABS is a misnomer as it checks for relative relocations too. However, some GNU ld ports produce unneeded R_*_NONE relocation entries. If a port fails to determine the exact .rel[a].dyn size, the trailing zeros become R_*_NONE relocations. E.g. ld's powerpc port recently fixed https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=29540). R_*_NONE are generally a no-op in the dynamic loaders. So just ignore them. Remove the ARCH_REL_TYPE_ABS defines and just validate that the resulting .so file does not contain any R_* relocation entries except R_*_NONE. This commit gets rid of the latter. Create vmlinux.a to collect all the objects that are unconditionally linked to vmlinux. The objects listed in head-y are moved to the head of vmlinux.a by using 'ar m'. With this, arch/$(SRCARCH)/kernel/Makefile can consistently use obj-y for builtin objects. There is no *.o that is directly linked to vmlinux. Drop unneeded code in scripts/clang-tools/gen_compile_commands.py. $(AR) mPi needs 'T' to workaround the llvm-ar bug. Commit 40966e316f86 ("kthread: Ensure struct kthread is present for all kthreads") caused init and the user mode helper threads that call kernel_execve to have struct kthread allocated for them. This struct kthread going away during execve in turned made a use after free of struct kthread possible. Here, commit 343f4c49f243 ("kthread: Don't allocate kthread_struct for init and umh") is enough to fix the use after free and is simple enough to be backportable. The rest of the changes pass struct kernel_clone_args to clean things up and cause the code to make sense. In making init and the user mode helpers tasks purely user mode tasks I ran into two complications. The function task_tick_numa was detecting tasks without an mm by testing for the presence of PF_KTHREAD. The initramfs code in populate_initrd_image was using flush_delayed_fput to ensuere the closing of all it's file descriptors was complete, and flush_delayed_fput does not work in a userspace thread. This allows any task that wants to be a user space task that only runs in kernel mode to use this functionality. The code on x86 is an exception and still retains a PF_KTHREAD test because x86 unlikely everything else handles kthreads slightly differently than user space tasks that start with a function. The functions that created tasks that start with a function have been updated to set ".fn" and ".fn_arg" instead of ".stack" and ".stack_size". The kernel task that exec's init and tasks that exec user mode helpers are also user mode tasks that just run kernel code until they call kernel execve.
