* hexagon: modify ffs() and fls() to return intRandy Dunlap2018-09-111-2/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Building drivers/mtd/nand/raw/nandsim.c on arch/hexagon/ produces a printk format build warning. This is due to hexagon's ffs() being coded as returning long instead of int. Fix the printk format warning by changing all of hexagon's ffs() and fls() functions to return int instead of long. The variables that they return are already int instead of long. This return type matches the return type in <asm-generic/bitops/>. ../drivers/mtd/nand/raw/nandsim.c: In function 'init_nandsim': ../drivers/mtd/nand/raw/nandsim.c:760:2: warning: format '%u' expects argument of type 'unsigned int', but argument 2 has type 'long int' [-Wformat] There are no ffs() or fls() allmodconfig build errors after making this change. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Commit a0f97e06a43c ("kbuild: enable 'make CFLAGS=...' to add additional options to CC") renamed CFLAGS to KBUILD_CFLAGS. Commit 222d394d30e7 ("kbuild: enable 'make AFLAGS=...' to add additional options to AS") renamed AFLAGS to KBUILD_AFLAGS. Commit 06c5040cdb13 ("kbuild: enable 'make CPPFLAGS=...' to add additional options to CPP") renamed CPPFLAGS to KBUILD_CPPFLAGS. For some reason, LDFLAGS was not renamed. Using a well-known variable like LDFLAGS may result in accidental override of the variable. Kbuild generally uses KBUILD_ prefixed variables for the internally appended options, so here is one more conversion to sanitize the naming convention. I did not touch Makefiles under tools/ since the tools build system is a different world. Signed-off-by: Masahiro Yamada <yamada.masahiro@socionext.com> Acked-by: Kirill A. * mm: convert return type of handle_mm_fault() caller to vm_fault_tSouptick Joarder2018-08-181-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Use new return type vm_fault_t for fault handler. For now, this is just documenting that the function returns a VM_FAULT value rather than an errno. Once all instances are converted, vm_fault_t will become a distinct type. Ref-> commit 1c8f422059ae ("mm: change return type to vm_fault_t") In this patch all the caller of handle_mm_fault() are changed to return vm_fault_t type. * | atomics/treewide: Make unconditional inc/dec ops optionalMark Rutland2018-06-211-6/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Many of the inc/dec ops are mandatory, but for most architectures inc/dec are simply trivial wrappers around their corresponding add/sub ops. Let's make all the inc/dec ops optional, so that we can get rid of these boilerplate wrappers. The instrumented atomics are updated accordingly. There should be no functional change as a result of this patch. Specifically: * <atomic>_inc_and_test(v) is (<atomic>_inc_return(v) == 0) * <atomic>_dec_and_test(v) is (<atomic>_dec_return(v) == 0) * <atomic>_sub_and_test(i, v) is (<atomic>_sub_return(i, v) == 0) * <atomic>_add_negative(i, v) is (<atomic>_add_return(i, v) < 0) Rather than have these definitions duplicated in all architectures, with minor inconsistencies in formatting and documentation, let's make these operations optional, with default fallbacks as above. Implementations must now provide a preprocessor symbol. The instrumented atomics are updated accordingly. Both x86 and m68k have custom implementations, which are left as-is, given preprocessor symbols to avoid being overridden. There should be no functional change as a result of this patch. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Several architectures these have a near-identical implementation based on atomic_read() and atomic_cmpxchg() which we can instead define in <linux/atomic.h>, so let's do so, using something close to the existing x86 implementation with try_cmpxchg(). Where an architecture provides its own atomic_fetch_add_unless(), it must define a preprocessor symbol for it. The instrumented atomics are updated accordingly. Note that arch/arc's existing atomic_fetch_add_unless() had redundant barriers, as these are already present in its atomic_cmpxchg() implementation. * | atomics/treewide: Rename __atomic_add_unless() => atomic_fetch_add_unless()Mark Rutland2018-06-211-2/+2
|/ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | While __atomic_add_unless() was originally intended as a building-block for atomic_add_unless(), it's now used in a number of places around the kernel. It's the only common atomic operation named __atomic*(), rather than atomic_*(), and for consistency it would be better named atomic_fetch_add_unless(). This lack of consistency is slightly confusing, and gets in the way of scripting atomics. Given that, let's clean things up and promote it to an official part of the atomics API, in the form of atomic_fetch_add_unless(). This patch converts definitions and invocations over to the new name, including the instrumented version, using the following script: ---- git grep -w __atomic_add_unless | while read line; do sed -i '{s/\<__atomic_add_unless\>/atomic_fetch_add_unless/}' "${line%%:*}"; done git grep -w __arch_atomic_add_unless | while read line; do sed -i '{s/\<__arch_atomic_add_unless\>/arch_atomic_fetch_add_unless/}' "${line%%:*}"; done ---- Note that we do not have atomic{64,_long}_fetch_add_unless(), which will be introduced by later patches. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | We have a couple of files that try to include asm/compat.h on architectures where this is available. Those should generally use the higher-level linux/compat.h file, but that in turn fails to include asm/compat.h when CONFIG_COMPAT is disabled, unless we can provide that header on all architectures. This adds the asm/compat.h for all remaining architectures to simplify the dependencies. This feature will allow consumers to lock in a certain rate on the output of a clk so that things like audio playback don't hear pops when the clk frequency changes due to shared parent clks changing rates. Currently the clk API doesn't guarantee the rate of a clk stays at the rate you request after clk_set_rate() is called, so this new API will allow drivers to express that requirement. Beyond this, the core got some debugfs pretty printing patches and a couple minor non-critical fixes. Looking outside of the core framework diff we have some new driver additions and the removal of a legacy TI clk driver. Both of these hit high in the dirstat. Also, the removal of the asm-generic/clkdev.h file causes small one-liners in all the architecture Kbuild files. |/ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Commit 0515e5999a466dfe ("bpf: introduce BPF_PROG_TYPE_PERF_EVENT program type") introduced the bpf_perf_event_data structure which exports the pt_regs structure. This is OK for multiple architectures but fail for s390 and arm64 which do not export pt_regs. Programs using them, for example, the bpf selftest fail to compile on these architectures. For s390, exporting the pt_regs is not an option because s390 wants to allow changes to it. For arm64, there is a user_pt_regs structure that covers parts of the pt_regs structure for use by user space. To solve the broken uapi for s390 and arm64, introduce an abstract type for pt_regs and add an asm/bpf_perf_event.h file that concretes the type. An asm-generic header file covers the architectures that export pt_regs today. The arch-specific enablement for s390 and arm64 follows in separate commits. This makes it hard for compliance tools to determine the correct license. Update these files with an SPDX license identifier. The identifier was chosen based on the license information in the file. GPL/LGPL licensed headers get the matching GPL/LGPL SPDX license identifier with the added 'WITH Linux-syscall-note' exception, which is the officially assigned exception identifier for the kernel syscall exception: NOTE! This copyright does *not* cover user programs that use kernel services by normal system calls - this is merely considered normal use of the kernel, and does *not* fall under the heading of "derived work". This exception makes it possible to include GPL headers into non GPL code, without confusing license compliance tools. Headers which have either explicit dual licensing or are just licensed under a non GPL license are updated with the corresponding SPDX identifier and the GPLv2 with syscall exception identifier. The format is: ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR SPDX-ID-OF-OTHER-LICENSE) SPDX license identifiers are a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. The update does not remove existing license information as this has to be done on a case by case basis and the copyright holders might have to be consulted. This will happen in a separate step. By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files. The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s) to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was: - Files considered eligible had to be source code files. - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5 lines of source - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5 lines). All documentation files were explicitly excluded. The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license identifiers to apply. - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was considered to have no license information in it, and the top level COPYING file license applied. For non */uapi/* files that summary was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 11139 and resulted in the first patch in this series. If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930 and resulted in the second patch in this series. - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in it (per prior point). Results summary: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------ GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270 GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17 LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15 GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14 ((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5 LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4 LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1 and that resulted in the third patch in this series. - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became the concluded license(s). - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a license but the other didn't, or they both detected different licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred. - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics). - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier, the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later in time. In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so they are related. Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks in about 15000 files. In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the correct identifier. Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch version early this week with: - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected license ids and scores - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+ files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the different types of files to be modified. These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to generate the patches. Also remove the implementation in spinlock_up.h, since all callers of do_raw_spin_lock_flags() call local_irq_save(flags) anyway. * | locking/core: Remove {read,spin,write}_can_lock()Will Deacon2017-10-101-10/+0
|/ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Outside of the locking code itself, {read,spin,write}_can_lock() have no users in tree. Apparmor (the last remaining user of write_can_lock()) got moved over to lockdep by the previous patch. This patch removes the use of {read,spin,write}_can_lock() from the BUILD_LOCK_OPS macro, deferring to the trylock operation for testing the lock status, and subsequently removes the unused macros altogether. They aren't guaranteed to work in a concurrent environment and can give incorrect results in the case of qrwlock. | * futex: Remove duplicated code and fix undefined behaviourJiri Slaby2017-08-251-34/+4
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | There is code duplicated over all architecture's headers for futex_atomic_op_inuser. Namely op decoding, access_ok check for uaddr, and comparison of the result. Remove this duplication and leave up to the arches only the needed assembly which is now in arch_futex_atomic_op_inuser. This effectively distributes the Will Deacon's arm64 fix for undefined behaviour reported by UBSAN to all architectures. The fix was done in commit 5f16a046f8e1 (arm64: futex: Fix undefined behaviour with FUTEX_OP_OPARG_SHIFT usage). Look there for an example dump. And as suggested by Thomas, check for negative oparg too, because it was also reported to cause undefined behaviour report. Note that s390 removed access_ok check in d12a29703 ("s390/uaccess: remove pointless access_ok() checks") as access_ok there returns true. We introduce it back to the helper for the sake of simplicity (it gets optimized away anyway). | * locking/atomic: Fix atomic_set_release() for 'funny' architecturesPeter Zijlstra2017-08-101-0/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Those architectures that have a special atomic_set implementation also need a special atomic_set_release(), because for the very same reason WRITE_ONCE() is broken for them, smp_store_release() is too. The vast majority is architectures that have spinlock hash based atomic implementation except hexagon which seems to have a hardware 'feature'. The spinlock based atomics should be SC, that is, none of them appear to place extra barriers in atomic_cmpxchg() or any of the other SC atomic primitives and therefore seem to rely on their spinlock implementation being SC (I did not fully validate all that). Therefore, the normal atomic_set() is SC and can be used at atomic_set_release(). * | arch: Remove spin_unlock_wait() arch-specific definitionsPaul E. McKenney2017-08-171-5/+0
|/ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | There is no agreed-upon definition of spin_unlock_wait()'s semantics, and it appears that all callers could do just as well with a lock/unlock pair. This commit therefore removes the underlying arch-specific arch_spin_unlock_wait() for all architectures providing them. Signed-off-by: Paul E. * hexagon: move generic-y of exported headers to uapi/asm/KbuildMasahiro Yamada2017-07-092-23/+23
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Since commit fcc8487d477a ("uapi: export all headers under uapi directories"), all (and only) headers under uapi directories are exported, but asm-generic wrappers are still exceptions. To complete de-coupling the uapi from kernel headers, move generic-y of exported headers to uapi/asm/Kbuild. With this change, "make headers_install" will just need to parse uapi/asm/Kbuild to build up exported headers. Also, move "generic-y += kprobes.h" up in order to keep the entries sorted. Introduce a convenient accounting infrastructure that maintains statistics per node, per memcg, and the lruvec itself.
