| | | | | | | | | | This reverts commit 81bf550d9cdfe0325eb1504b06c9f6511b442c1a. HAVE_ARCH_TRACEHOOK requires defining the user_regset interfaces, including task_user_regset_view(). parisc doesn't do that yet, so don't lie about it. Signed-off-by: Roland McGrath <roland@redhat.com>

* perf: Do the big rename: Performance Counters -> Performance EventsIngo Molnar2009-09-211-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Bye-bye Performance Counters, welcome Performance Events! In the past few months the perfcounters subsystem has grown out its initial role of counting hardware events, and has become (and is becoming) a much broader generic event enumeration, reporting, logging, monitoring, analysis facility. Naming its core object 'perf_counter' and naming the subsystem 'perfcounters' has become more and more of a misnomer. With pending code like hw-breakpoints support the 'counter' name is less and less appropriate. All in one, we've decided to rename the subsystem to 'performance events' and to propagate this rename through all fields, variables and API names. (in an ABI compatible fashion) The word 'event' is also a bit shorter than 'counter' - which makes it slightly more convenient to write/handle as well. Thanks goes to Stephane Eranian who first observed this misnomer and suggested a rename. User-space tooling and ABI compatibility is not affected - this patch should be function-invariant. (Also, defconfigs were not touched to keep the size down.) This patch has been generated via the following script: FILES=$(find * -type f | grep -vE 'oprofile|[^K]config') sed -i \ -e 's/PERF_EVENT_/PERF_RECORD_/g' \ -e 's/PERF_COUNTER/PERF_EVENT/g' \ -e 's/perf_counter/perf_event/g' \ -e 's/nb_counters/nb_events/g' \ -e 's/swcounter/swevent/g' \ -e 's/tpcounter_event/tp_event/g' \ $FILES for N in $(find . -name perf_counter.[ch]); do M=$(echo $N | sed 's/perf_counter/perf_event/g') mv $N $M done FILES=$(find . -name perf_event.*) sed -i \ -e 's/COUNTER_MASK/REG_MASK/g' \ -e 's/COUNTER/EVENT/g' \ -e 's/\<event\>/event_id/g' \ -e 's/counter/event/g' \ -e 's/Counter/Event/g' \ $FILES ... to keep it as correct as possible. This script can also be used by anyone who has pending perfcounters patches - it converts a Linux kernel tree over to the new naming. We tried to time this change to the point in time where the amount of pending patches is the smallest: the end of the merge window. Namespace clashes were fixed up in a preparatory patch - and some stylistic fallout will be fixed up in a subsequent patch. ( NOTE: 'counters' are still the proper terminology when we deal with hardware registers - and these sed scripts are a bit over-eager in renaming them. I've undone some of that, but in case there's something left where 'counter' would be better than 'event' we can undo that on an individual basis instead of touching an otherwise nicely automated patch. ) Suggested-by: Stephane Eranian <eranian@google.com> Acked-by: Peter Zijlstra <a.p.zijlstra@chello.nl> Acked-by: Paul Mackerras <paulus@samba.org> Reviewed-by: Arjan van de Ven <arjan@linux.intel.com> Cc: Mike Galbraith <efault@gmx.de> Cc: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com> Cc: Frederic Weisbecker <fweisbec@gmail.com> Cc: Steven Rostedt <rostedt@goodmis.org> Cc: Benjamin Herrenschmidt <benh@kernel.crashing.org> Cc: David Howells <dhowells@redhat.com> Cc: Kyle McMartin <kyle@mcmartin.ca> Cc: Martin Schwidefsky <schwidefsky@de.ibm.com> Cc: "David S. * cpumask: centralize cpu_online_map and cpu_possible_mapRusty Russell2008-12-131-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Impact: cleanup Each SMP arch defines these themselves. Move them to a central location. Twists: 1) Some archs (m32, parisc, s390) set possible_map to all 1, so we add a CONFIG_INIT_ALL_POSSIBLE for this rather than break them. 2) mips and sparc32 '#define cpu_possible_map phys_cpu_present_map'. Those archs simply have phys_cpu_present_map replaced everywhere. 3) Alpha defined cpu_possible_map to cpu_present_map; this is tricky so I just manipulate them both in sync. 4) IA64, cris and m32r have gratuitous 'extern cpumask_t cpu_possible_map' declarations. * | container freezer: implement freezer cgroup subsystemMatt Helsley2008-10-201-0/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch implements a new freezer subsystem in the control groups framework. It provides a way to stop and resume execution of all tasks in a cgroup by writing in the cgroup filesystem. The freezer subsystem in the container filesystem defines a file named freezer.state. Writing "FROZEN" to the state file will freeze all tasks in the cgroup. Subsequently writing "RUNNING" will unfreeze the tasks in the cgroup. Reading will return the current state. * Examples of usage : # mkdir /containers/freezer # mount -t cgroup -ofreezer freezer /containers # mkdir /containers/0 # echo $some_pid > /containers/0/tasks to get status of the freezer subsystem : # cat /containers/0/freezer.state RUNNING to freeze all tasks in the container : # echo FROZEN > /containers/0/freezer.state # cat /containers/0/freezer.state FREEZING # cat /containers/0/freezer.state FROZEN to unfreeze all tasks in the container : # echo RUNNING > /containers/0/freezer.state # cat /containers/0/freezer.state RUNNING This is the basic mechanism which should do the right thing for user space task in a simple scenario. It's important to note that freezing can be incomplete. In that case we return EBUSY. This means that some tasks in the cgroup are busy doing something that prevents us from completely freezing the cgroup at this time. After EBUSY, the cgroup will remain partially frozen -- reflected by freezer.state reporting "FREEZING" when read. The state will remain "FREEZING" until one of these things happens: 1) Userspace cancels the freezing operation by writing "RUNNING" to the freezer.state file 2) Userspace retries the freezing operation by writing "FROZEN" to the freezer.state file (writing "FREEZING" is not legal and returns EIO) 3) The tasks that blocked the cgroup from entering the "FROZEN" state disappear from the cgroup's set of tasks. |/ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Linus: On the per-architecture side, I do think it would be better to *not* have internal architecture knowledge in a generic file, and as such a line like depends on X86_32 || IA64 || PPC || S390 || SPARC64 || X86_64 || AVR32 really shouldn't exist in a file like kernel/Kconfig.instrumentation. It would be much better to do depends on ARCH_SUPPORTS_KPROBES in that generic file, and then architectures that do support it would just have a bool ARCH_SUPPORTS_KPROBES default y in *their* architecture files. That would seem to be much more logical, and is readable both for arch maintainers *and* for people who have no clue - and don't care - about which architecture is supposed to support which interface... Changelog: Actually, I know I gave this as the magic incantation, but now that I see it, I realize that I should have told you to just use config ARCH_SUPPORTS_KPROBES def_bool y instead, which is a bit denser. We seem to use both kinds of syntax for these things, but this is really what "def_bool" is there for... Changelog : - Moving to HAVE_*. - Add AVR32 oprofile. * spinlock: lockbreak cleanupNick Piggin2008-01-301-0/+5
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The break_lock data structure and code for spinlocks is quite nasty. Not only does it double the size of a spinlock but it changes locking to a potentially less optimal trylock. Put all of that under CONFIG_GENERIC_LOCKBREAK, and introduce a __raw_spin_is_contended that uses the lock data itself to determine whether there are waiters on the lock, to be used if CONFIG_GENERIC_LOCKBREAK is not set. Rename need_lockbreak to spin_needbreak, make it use spin_is_contended to decouple it from the spinlock implementation, and make it typesafe (rwlocks do not have any need_lockbreak sites -- why do they even get bloated up with that break_lock then?). | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This facility provides three entry points: ilog2() Log base 2 of unsigned long ilog2_u32() Log base 2 of u32 ilog2_u64() Log base 2 of u64 These facilities can either be used inside functions on dynamic data: int do_something(long q) { ...; y = ilog2(x) ...; } Or can be used to statically initialise global variables with constant values: unsigned n = ilog2(27); When performing static initialisation, the compiler will report "error: initializer element is not constant" if asked to take a log of zero or of something not reducible to a constant. They treat negative numbers as unsigned. When not dealing with a constant, they fall back to using fls() which permits them to use arch-specific log calculation instructions - such as BSR on x86/x86_64 or SCAN on FRV - if available. | | | | | | | | | It seems PA7200 processors also suppress traps on loads to %r0. This means we can prefetch for read on these cpus. Of course, we can't support prefetch for write, since that requires LOAD DOUBLEWORD which was added with PA2.0 Signed-off-by: Kyle McMartin <kyle@parisc-linux.org>

* [PATCH] Configurable NODES_SHIFTYasunori Goto2006-04-111-0/+5
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Current implementations define NODES_SHIFT in include/asm-xxx/numnodes.h for each arch. Its definition is sometimes configurable. Indeed, ia64 defines 5 NODES_SHIFT values in the current git tree. But it looks a bit messy. SGI-SN2(ia64) system requires 1024 nodes, and the number of nodes already has been changeable by config. Suitable node's number may be changed in the future even if it is other architecture. So, I wrote configurable node's number. This patch set defines just default value for each arch which needs multi nodes except ia64. But, it is easy to change to configurable if necessary. On ia64 the number of nodes can be already configured in generic ia64 and SN2 config. But, NODES_SHIFT is defined for DIG64 and HP'S machine too. So, I changed it so that all platforms can be configured via CONFIG_NODES_SHIFT. It would be simpler. * [PATCH] hrtimer: round up relative start time on low-res archesIngo Molnar2006-02-151-0/+5
| | | | | | | | | | | | | CONFIG_TIME_LOW_RES is a temporary way for architectures to signal that they simply return xtime in do_gettimeoffset(). In this corner-case we want to round up by resolution when starting a relative timer, to avoid short timeouts. This will go away with the GTOD framework. * [PATCH] Kconfig fix (BLK_DEV_FD dependencies)viro@ZenIV.linux.org.uk2005-09-081-0/+4
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Sanitized and fixed floppy dependencies: split the messy dependencies for BLK_DEV_FD by introducing a new symbol (ARCH_MAY_HAVE_PC_FDC), making BLK_DEV_FD depend on that one and taking declarations of ARCH_MAY_HAVE_PC_FDC to arch/*/Kconfig. While we are at it, fixed several obvious cases when BLK_DEV_FD should have been excluded (architectures lacking asm/floppy.h are *not* going to have floppy.c compile, let alone work). If you can come up with better name for that ("this architecture might have working PC-compatible floppy disk controller"), you are more than welcome - just s/ARCH_MAY_HAVE_PC_FDC/your_prefered_name/g in the patch below... * [NET]: add a top-level Networking menu to *configSam Ravnborg2005-07-121-0/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Create a new top-level menu named "Networking" thus moving net related options and protocol selection way from the drivers menu and up on the top-level where they belong. To implement this all architectures has to source "net/Kconfig" before drivers/*/Kconfig in their Kconfig file. This change has been implemented for all architectures. Device drivers for ordinary NIC's are still to be found in the Device Drivers section, but Bluetooth, IrDA and ax25 are located with their corresponding menu entries under the new networking menu item. * [PATCH] make each arch use mm/KconfigDave Hansen2005-06-231-1/+7
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | For all architectures, this just means that you'll see a "Memory Model" choice in your architecture menu. For those that implement DISCONTIGMEM, you may eventually want to make your ARCH_DISCONTIGMEM_ENABLE a "def_bool y" and make your users select DISCONTIGMEM right out of the new choice menu. The only disadvantage might be if you have some specific things that you need in your help option to explain something about DISCONTIGMEM. * [PATCH] ISA DMA Kconfig fixes - part 1Al Viro2005-05-041-0/+4
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | A bunch of drivers use ISA DMA helpers or their equivalents for platforms that have ISA with different DMA controller (a lot of ARM boxen). Currently there is no way to put such dependency in Kconfig - CONFIG_ISA is not it (e.g. it is not set on platforms that have no ISA slots, but have on-board devices that pretend to be ISA ones). New symbol added - ISA_DMA_API. Set when we have functional enable_dma()/set_dma_mode()/etc. set of helpers. Next patches in the series will add missing dependencies for drivers that need them. I'm very carefully staying the hell out of the recurring flamefest on what exactly CONFIG_ISA would mean in ideal world - added symbol has a well-defined meaning and for now I really want to treat it as completely independent from the mess around CONFIG_ISA. * Linux-2.6.12-rc2v2.6.12-rc2Linus Torvalds2005-04-171-0/+199
Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
