const qualify the struct ctl_table argument in the proc_handler function
signatures. This is a prerequisite to moving the static ctl_table
structs into .rodata data which will ensure that proc_handler function
pointers cannot be modified.
This patch has been generated by the following coccinelle script:
```
* Code formatting was adjusted in xfs_sysctl.c to comply with code
conventions. The xfs_stats_clear_proc_handler,
xfs_panic_mask_proc_handler and xfs_deprecated_dointvec_minmax where
adjusted.
* The ctl_table argument in proc_watchdog_common was const qualified.
This is called from a proc_handler itself and is calling back into
another proc_handler, making it necessary to change it as part of the
proc_handler migration.
This commit comes at the tail end of a greater effort to remove the
empty elements at the end of the ctl_table arrays (sentinels) which will
reduce the overall build time size of the kernel and run time memory
bloat by ~64 bytes per sentinel (further information Link :
https://lore.kernel.org/all/ZO5Yx5JFogGi%2FcBo@bombadil.infradead.org/)
Remove the sentinel element from appldata_table, s390dbf_table,
topology_ctl_table, cmm_table and page_table_sysctl. Reduced the memory
allocation in appldata_register_ops by 1 effectively removing the
sentinel from ops->ctl_table.
This removal is safe because register_sysctl_sz and register_sysctl use
the array size in addition to checking for the sentinel.
This commit adds table_size to register_sysctl in preparation for the
removal of the sentinel elements in the ctl_table arrays (last empty
markers). And though we do *not* remove any sentinels in this commit, we
set things up by either passing the table_size explicitly or using
ARRAY_SIZE on the ctl_table arrays.
We replace the register_syctl function with a macro that will add the
ARRAY_SIZE to the new register_sysctl_sz function. In this way the
callers that are already using an array of ctl_table structs do not
change. For the callers that pass a ctl_table array pointer, we pass the
table_size to register_sysctl_sz instead of the macro.
Include linux/io.h instead of asm/io.h everywhere. linux/io.h includes
asm/io.h, so this shouldn't cause any problems. Instead this might help for
some randconfig build errors which were reported due to some undefined io
related functions.
Also move the changed include so it stays grouped together with other
includes from the same directory.
For ctcm_mpc.c also remove not needed comments (actually questions).
The routine appldata_register_ops() allocates a sysctl table
with 4 entries. The firsts one, ops->ctl_table[0] is the parent directory
with an empty entry following it, ops->ctl_table[1]. The next entry is
for the ops->name and that is ops->ctl_table[2]. It needs an empty
entry following that, and that is ops->ctl_table[3]. And so hence the
kcalloc(4, sizeof(struct ctl_table), GFP_KERNEL).
We can simplify this considerably since sysctl_register("foo", table)
can create the parent directory for us if it does not exist. So we
can just remove the first two entries and move back the ops->name to
the first entry, and just use kcalloc(2, ...).
Instead of having all the sysctl handlers deal with user pointers, which
is rather hairy in terms of the BPF interaction, copy the input to and
from userspace in common code. This also means that the strings are
always NUL-terminated by the common code, making the API a little bit
safer.
As most handler just pass through the data to one of the common handlers
a lot of the changes are mechnical.
In the sysctl code the proc_dointvec_minmax() function is often used to
validate the user supplied value between an allowed range. This
function uses the extra1 and extra2 members from struct ctl_table as
minimum and maximum allowed value.
On sysctl handler declaration, in every source file there are some
readonly variables containing just an integer which address is assigned
to the extra1 and extra2 members, so the sysctl range is enforced.
The special values 0, 1 and INT_MAX are very often used as range
boundary, leading duplication of variables like zero=0, one=1,
int_max=INT_MAX in different source files:
$ git grep -E '\.extra[12].*&(zero|one|int_max)' |wc -l
248
Add a const int array containing the most commonly used values, some
macros to refer more easily to the correct array member, and use them
instead of creating a local one for every object file.
This is the bloat-o-meter output comparing the old and new binary
compiled with the default Fedora config:
The kzalloc() function has a 2-factor argument form, kcalloc(). This
patch replaces cases of:
kzalloc(a * b, gfp)
with:
kcalloc(a * b, gfp)
as well as handling cases of:
kzalloc(a * b * c, gfp)
with:
kzalloc(array3_size(a, b, c), gfp)
as it's slightly less ugly than:
kzalloc_array(array_size(a, b), c, gfp)
This does, however, attempt to ignore constant size factors like:
kzalloc(4 * 1024, gfp)
though any constants defined via macros get caught up in the conversion.
Any factors with a sizeof() of "unsigned char", "char", and "u8" were
dropped, since they're redundant.
The Coccinelle script used for this was:
// Fix redundant parens around sizeof().
It's good to have SPDX identifiers in all files to make it easier to
audit the kernel tree for correct licenses.
Update the arch/s390/appldata/ files with the correct SPDX license
identifier based on the license text in the file itself. The SPDX
identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of
the full boiler plate text.
This work is based on a script and data from Thomas Gleixner, Philippe
Ombredanne, and Kate Stewart.
The workqueue "appldata_wq" has been replaced with an ordered dedicated
workqueue.
WQ_MEM_RECLAIM has not been set since the workqueue is not being used on
a memory reclaim path.
The adapter->work_queue queues multiple work items viz
&adapter->scan_work, &port->rport_work, &adapter->ns_up_work,
&adapter->stat_work, adapter->work_queue, &adapter->events.work,
&port->gid_pn_work, &port->test_link_work. Hence, an ordered
dedicated workqueue has been used.
WQ_MEM_RECLAIM has been set to ensure forward progress under memory
pressure.
Just change the type of "len" to unsigned int so the compiler can prove
that we don't have a buffer overflow (and generates less code).
The current virtual timer interface is inherently per-cpu and hard to
use. The sole user of the interface is appldata which uses it to execute
a function after a specific amount of cputime has been used over all cpus.
Rework the virtual timer interface to hook into the cputime accounting.
This makes the interface independent from the CPU timer interrupts, and
makes the virtual timers global as opposed to per-cpu.
Overall the code is greatly simplified. The downside is that the accuracy
is not as good as the original implementation, but it is still good enough
for appldata.
Remove the file name from the comment at top of many files. In most
cases the file name was wrong anyway, so it's rather pointless.
Also unify the IBM copyright statement. We did have a lot of sightly
different statements and wanted to change them one after another
whenever a file gets touched. However that never happened. Instead
people start to take the old/"wrong" statements to use as a template
for new files.
So unify all of them in one go.
The appldata_ops callbacks are called with a spin_lock held. But the
mod_virt_timer() was used to modify/add cpu timers for cpus that were
set online. This resulted in a one-shot timer for every cpu that was
newly added or previously set offline, instead of an interval timer,
which broke the appldata vtime interval setup.
To fix this, the new mod_virt_timer_periodic() function is used, which
adds interval timers instead of one-shot timers.
arch/s390/Kconfig tells us that CONFIG_APPLDATA_BASE is bool and hence can
never be built modular. Given this, defining appldata_exit() function is
pointless (and wasteful, actually). Remove all that.
Previous patch annotated appldata_offline_cpu() as __cpuexit, but now with the
__exit function appldata_exit() gone, the only callsite that references it is
__cpuinit, so this function can also be __cpuinit, thereby saving space when
HOTPLUG_CPU=n.
appldata_offline_cpu() is only called from __cpuinit-marked hotplug
notifier callback and from the __exit-marked module_exit function,
therefore candidate for __cpuexit.
BTW the __exit module_exit function appldata_exit() of this driver fails to
unregister_hotcpu_notifier() the notifier_block that was registered by
appldata_init() during module startup. This will lead to oops if hotplug
notification comes after module has been unloaded. Let's fix this by
unregistering the notifier appropriately (before appldata_offline_cpu()'ing
the CPUs).
Since nonboot CPUs are now disabled after tasks and devices have been
frozen and the CPU hotplug infrastructure is used for this purpose, we need
special CPU hotplug notifications that will help the CPU-hotplug-aware
subsystems distinguish normal CPU hotplug events from CPU hotplug events
related to a system-wide suspend or resume operation in progress. This
patch introduces such notifications and causes them to be used during
suspend and resume transitions. It also changes all of the
CPU-hotplug-aware subsystems to take these notifications into consideration
(for now they are handled in the same way as the corresponding "normal"
ones).
The semantic effect of insert_at_head is that it would allow new registered
sysctl entries to override existing sysctl entries of the same name. Which is
pain for caching and the proc interface never implemented.
I have done an audit and discovered that none of the current users of
register_sysctl care as (excpet for directories) they do not register
duplicate sysctl entries.
So this patch simply removes the support for overriding existing entries in
the sys_sysctl interface since no one uses it or cares and it makes future
enhancments harder.
There was lots of #ifdef noise in the kernel due to hotcpu_notifier(fn,
generating compiler warnings of unused symbols, hence forcing people to add
#ifdefs.
the compiler can skip truly unused functions just fine:
