* thp: pte alloc trans splittingAndrea Arcangeli2011-01-141-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | pte alloc routines must wait for split_huge_page if the pmd is not present and not null (i.e. pmd_trans_splitting). The additional branches are optimized away at compile time by pmd_trans_splitting if the config option is off. However we must pass the vma down in order to know the anon_vma lock to wait for. * um: fix ptrace build errorRichard Weinberger2010-11-121-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Both commits 0a3d763f1a68 ("ptrace: cleanup arch_ptrace() on um") and 9b05a69e0534 ("ptrace: change signature of arch_ptrace()") broke the um build. This patch fixes the issues. 0a3d763f1a68 introduced the undeclared variable "datavp". | | | | | | | | | | | | | | With glibc 2.11 or later that was built with --enable-multi-arch, the UML link fails with undefined references to __rel_iplt_start and similar symbols. * um: remove PAGE_SIZE alignment in linker script causing kernel segfault.Richard Weinberger2010-10-271-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The linker script cleanup that I did in commit 5d150a97f93 ("um: Clean up linker script using standard macros.") (2.6.32) accidentally introduced an ALIGN(PAGE_SIZE) when converting to use INIT_TEXT_SECTION; Richard Weinberger reported that this causes the kernel to segfault with CONFIG_STATIC_LINK=y. I'm not certain why this extra alignment is a problem, but it seems likely it is because previously __init_begin = _stext = _text = _sinittext and with the extra ALIGN(PAGE_SIZE), _sinittext becomes different from the rest. So there is likely a bug here where something is assuming that _sinittext is the same as one of those other symbols. But reverting the accidental change fixes the regression, so it seems worth committing that now. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Three uml device drivers still use the big kernel lock, but all of them can be safely converted to using a per-driver mutex instead. * Make do_execve() take a const filename pointerDavid Howells2010-08-182-3/+6
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Make do_execve() take a const filename pointer so that kernel_execve() compiles correctly on ARM: arch/arm/kernel/sys_arm.c:88: warning: passing argument 1 of 'do_execve' discards qualifiers from pointer target type This also requires the argv and envp arguments to be consted twice, once for the pointer array and once for the strings the array points to. This is because do_execve() passes a pointer to the filename (now const) to copy_strings_kernel(). A simpler alternative would be to cast the filename pointer in do_execve() when it's passed to copy_strings_kernel(). do_execve() may not change any of the strings it is passed as part of the argv or envp lists as they are some of them in .rodata, so marking these strings as const should be fine. Further kernel_execve() and sys_execve() need to be changed to match. This has been test built on x86_64, frv, arm and mips. * | include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking ↵Tejun Heo2010-03-306-2/+6
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Use the generic ptrace_resume code for PTRACE_SYSCALL, PTRACE_CONT, PTRACE_KILL and PTRACE_SINGLESTEP. This implies defining arch_has_single_step in <asm/ptrace.h> and implementing the user_enable_single_step and user_disable_single_step functions, which also causes the breakpoint information to be cleared on fork, which could be considered a bug fix. Also the TIF_SYSCALL_TRACE thread flag is now cleared on PTRACE_KILL which it previously wasn't which is consistent with all architectures using the modern ptrace code. This happends to be the case of CPPFLAGS_vmlinux.lds. This is rather unfortunate, as it now causes build failures when using SHELL=/bin/bash to compile, or when bash happens to be used by make (eg when it's /bin/sh) Remove the common definition of CPPFLAGS_vmlinux.lds by pushing relevant stuff to either Makefile.build or the arch specific kernel/Makefile where we build the linker script. This is also nice cleanup as we move the information out where it is used. Notes for the different architectures touched: arm - we use an already exported symbol cris - we use a config symbol aleady available [Not build tested] mips - the jiffies complexity has moved to vmlinux.lds.S where we need it. Added a few variables to CPPFLAGS - they are only used by the linker script. [Not build tested] powerpc - removed assignment that is not needed [not build tested] sparc - simplified it using $(BITS) um - introduced a few new exported variables to deal with this xtensa - added options to CPP invocation [not build tested] Cc: Albin Tonnerre <albin.tonnerre@free-electrons.com> Cc: Russell King <linux@arm.linux.org.uk> Cc: Mikael Starvik <starvik@axis.com> Cc: Jesper Nilsson <jesper.nilsson@axis.com> Cc: Benjamin Herrenschmidt <benh@kernel.crashing.org> Cc: Paul Mackerras <paulus@samba.org> Cc: "David S. * | linker script: unify usage of discard definitionTejun Heo2009-07-092-2/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Discarded sections in different archs share some commonality but have considerable differences. This led to linker script for each arch implementing its own /DISCARD/ definition, which makes maintaining tedious and adding new entries error-prone. This patch makes all linker scripts to move discard definitions to the end of the linker script and use the common DISCARDS macro. As ld uses the first matching section definition, archs can include default discarded sections by including them earlier in the linker script. ia64 is notable because it first throws away some ia64 specific subsections and then include the rest of the sections into the final image, so those sections must be discarded before the inclusion. defconfig compile tested for x86, x86-64, powerpc, powerpc64, ia64, alpha, sparc, sparc64 and s390. |/ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | x86 throws away .discard section but no other archs do. Also, .discard is not thrown away while linking modules.
