* Revert "x86-64: Disable local APIC timer use on AMD systems with C1E"Linus Torvalds2007-09-271-34/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This reverts commit e66485d747505e9d960b864fc6c37f8b2afafaf0, since Rafael Wysocki noticed that the change only works for his in -mm, not in mainline (and that both "noapictimer" _and_ "apicmaintimer" are broken on his hardware, but that's apparently not a regression, just a symptom of the same issue that causes the automatic apic timer disable to not work). It turns out that it really doesn't work correctly on x86-64, since x86-64 doesn't use the generic clock events for timers yet. Thanks to Rafal for testing, and here's the ugly details on x86-64 as per Thomas: "I just looked into the code and the logic vs. noapictimer on SMP is completely broken. On i386 the noapictimer option not only disables the local APIC timer, it also registers the CPUs for broadcasting via IPI on SMP systems. The x86-64 code uses the broadcast only when the local apic timer is active, i.e. "noapictimer" is not on the command line. This defeats the whole purpose of "noapictimer". It should be there to make boxen work, where the local APIC timer actually has a hardware problem, e.g. the nx6325. The current implementation of x86_64 only fixes the ACPI c-states related problem where the APIC timer stops in C3(2), nothing else. On nx6325 and other AMD X2 equipped systems which have the C1E enabled we run into the following: PIT keeps jiffies (and the system) running, but the local APIC timer interrupts can get out of sync due to this C1E effect. I don't think this is a critical problem, but it is wrong nevertheless. I think it's safe to revert the C1E patch and postpone the fix to the clock events conversion." On further reflection, Thomas noted: "It's even worse than I thought on the first check: "noapictimer" on the command line of an SMP box prevents _ONLY_ the boot CPU apic timer from being used. But the secondary CPU is still unconditionally setting up the APIC timer and uses the non calibrated variable calibration_result, which is of course 0, to setup the APIC timer. Wreckage guaranteed." so we'll just have to wait for the x86 merge to hopefully fix this up for x86-64. Tested-and-requested-by: Rafael J. * x86-64: Disable local APIC timer use on AMD systems with C1EThomas Gleixner2007-09-261-0/+34
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | commit 3556ddfa9284a86a59a9b78fe5894430f6ab4eef titled [PATCH] x86-64: Disable local APIC timer use on AMD systems with C1E solves a problem with AMD dual core laptops e.g. HP nx6325 (Turion 64 X2) with C1E enabled: When both cores go into idle at the same time, then the system switches into C1E state, which is basically the same as C3. This stops the local apic timer. This was debugged right after the dyntick merge on i386 and despite the patch title it fixes only the 32 bit path. x86_64 is still missing this fix. It seems that mainline is not really affected by this issue, as the PIT is running and keeps jiffies incrementing, but that's just waiting for trouble. -mm suffers from this problem due to the x86_64 high resolution timer patches. This is a quick and dirty port of the i386 code to x86_64. I spent quite a time with Rafael to debug the -mm / hrt wreckage until someone pointed us to this. I really had forgotten that we debugged this half a year ago already. Sigh, is it just me or is there something yelling arch/x86 into my ear? | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Some Intel features are spread around in different CPUID leafs like 0x5, 0x6 and 0xA. Make this feature detection code common across i386 and x86_64. Display Intel Dynamic Acceleration feature in /proc/cpuinfo. This feature will be enabled automatically by current acpi-cpufreq driver. * Revert "[PATCH] x86: __pa and __pa_symbol address space separation"Linus Torvalds2007-05-071-5/+4
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This was broken. It adds complexity, for no good reason. Rather than separate __pa() and __pa_symbol(), we should deprecate __pa_symbol(), and preferably __pa() too - and just use "virt_to_phys()" instead, which is more readable and has nicer semantics. However, right now, just undo the separation, and make __pa_symbol() be the exact same as __pa(). That fixes the bugs this patch introduced, and we can do the fairly obvious cleanups later. Do the new __phys_addr() function (which is now the actual workhorse for the unified __pa()/__pa_symbol()) as a real external function, that way all the potential issues with compile/link-time optimizations of constant symbol addresses go away, and we can also, if we choose to, add more sanity-checking of the argument. * [PATCH] x86: __pa and __pa_symbol address space separationVivek Goyal2007-05-021-4/+5
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Currently __pa_symbol is for use with symbols in the kernel address map and __pa is for use with pointers into the physical memory map. But the code is implemented so you can usually interchange the two. __pa which is much more common can be implemented much more cheaply if it is it doesn't have to worry about any other kernel address spaces. This is especially true with a relocatable kernel as __pa_symbol needs to peform an extra variable read to resolve the address. There is a third macro that is added for the vsyscall data __pa_vsymbol for finding the physical addesses of vsyscall pages. Most of this patch is simply sorting through the references to __pa or __pa_symbol and using the proper one. A little of it is continuing to use a physical address when we have it instead of recalculating it several times. swapper_pgd is now NULL. leave_mm now uses init_mm.pgd and init_mm.pgd is initialized at boot (instead of compile time) to the physmem virtual mapping of init_level4_pgd. The physical address changed. Except for the for EMPTY_ZERO page all of the remaining references to __pa_symbol appear to be during kernel initialization. So this should reduce the cost of __pa in the common case, even on a relocated kernel. As this is technically a semantic change we need to be on the lookout for anything I missed. But it works for me (tm). Signed-off-by: Eric W. Biederman <ebiederm@xmission.com> Signed-off-by: Vivek Goyal <vgoyal@in.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: Andi Kleen <ak@suse.de>
* [PATCH] x86-64: Remove the identity mapping as early as possibleVivek Goyal2007-05-021-2/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | With the rewrite of the SMP trampoline and the early page allocator there is nothing that needs identity mapped pages, once we start executing C code. So add zap_identity_mappings into head64.c and remove zap_low_mappings() from much later in the code. The functions are subtly different thus the name change. This also kills boot_level4_pgt which was from an earlier attempt to move the identity mappings as early as possible, and is now no longer needed. Essentially I have replaced boot_level4_pgt with trampoline_level4_pgt in trampoline.S Signed-off-by: Eric W. * [PATCH] x86-64: 64bit PIC SMP trampolineVivek Goyal2007-05-021-8/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This modifies the SMP trampoline and all of the associated code so it can jump to a 64bit kernel loaded at an arbitrary address. The dependencies on having an idenetity mapped page in the kernel page tables for SMP bootup have all been removed. In addition the trampoline has been modified to verify that long mode is supported. Asking if long mode is implemented is down right silly but we have traditionally had some of these checks, and they can't hurt anything. So when the totally ludicrous happens we just might handle it correctly. Signed-off-by: Eric W. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Remove the statically allocated memory to NUMA node hash map in favor of a dynamically allocated memory to node hash map (it is cache aligned). This patch has the nice side effect in that it allows the hash map to grow for systems with large amounts of memory (256GB - 1TB), but suffer from having small PCI space tacked onto the boot node (which is somewhere between 192MB to 512MB on the ES7000). | * [PATCH] x86-64: Mark rdtsc as sync only for netburst, not for core2Arjan van de Ven2006-12-071-1/+4
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | On the Core2 cpus, the rdtsc instruction is not serializing (as defined in the architecture reference since rdtsc exists) and due to the deep speculation of these cores, it's possible that you can observe time go backwards between cores due to this speculation. Since the kernel already deals with this with the SYNC_RDTSC flag, the solution is simple, only assume that the instruction is serializing on family 15... The price one pays for this is a slightly slower gettimeofday (by a dozen or two cycles), but that increase is quite small to pay for a really-going-forward tsc counter. I put in a single early_printk so that we know the kernel is alive (early_printk doesn't need any locks) This makes some things easier for initialization of unwind for lockdep, which is needed by later patches. cc: mingo@elte.hu Signed-off-by: Andi Kleen <ak@suse.de>
| * [PATCH] Convert x86-64 to early paramAndi Kleen2006-09-261-179/+18
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Instead of hackish manual parsing Requires earlier i386 patchkit, but also fixes i386 early_printk again. I removed some obsolete really early parameters which didn't do anything useful. Also made a few parameters that needed it early (mostly oops printing setup) Also removed one panic check that wasn't visible without early console anyways (the early console is now initialized after that panic) This cleans up a lot of code. | * [PATCH] Use early CPU identify before early command line parsingAndi Kleen2006-09-261-2/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This makes it possible to modify CPU flags in command line options without hacks. And remove another copy in head64.c Signed-off-by: Andi Kleen <ak@suse.de>
| * [PATCH] initialize end of memory variables as early as possibleJan Beulich2006-09-261-1/+6
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | While an earlier patch already did a small step into that direction, this patch moves initialization of all memory end variables to as early as possible, so that dependent code doesn't need to check whether these variables have already been set. Also, remove a misleading (perhaps just outdated) comment, and make static a variable only used in a single file. | * [PATCH] Move early chipset quirks out to new fileAndi Kleen2006-09-261-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | They did not really belong into io_apic.c. Move them into a new file and clean it up a bit. Also remove outdated ATI quirk that was obsolete, Signed-off-by: Andi Kleen <ak@suse.de>
| * [PATCH] Remove all ifdefs for local/io apicAndi Kleen2006-09-261-6/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | IO-APIC or local APIC can only be disabled at runtime anyways and Kconfig has forced these options on for a long time now. The Kconfigs are kept only now for the benefit of the shared acpi boot.c code. Signed-off-by: Andi Kleen <ak@suse.de>
* | [PATCH] Make swsusp avoid memory holes and reserved memory regions on x86_64Rafael J. Wysocki2006-09-261-0/+1
|/ | | | | | | | | | | | | | On x86_64 machines with more than 2 GB of RAM there are large memory gaps (with no corresponding kernel virtual addresses) and reserved memory regions between areas of usable physical RAM. Moreover, if CONFIG_FLATMEM is set, they appear within the normal zone. swsusp should not try to save them, so the corresponding page structs have to be marked as 'nosave'. Signed-off-by: Rafael J. * [PATCH] x86_64: Recover 1MB of kernel memoryAndi Kleen2006-08-311-4/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | Noticed by Jan Beulich. When the kernel was moved from 1MB to 2MB in 2.6.17 the kernel reservation code wasn't adjusted and it still reserved starting with 1MB. This means 1MB always were lost. This patch fixes this by reserving only starting with _text. Signed-off-by: Andi Kleen <ak@suse.de> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
* [PATCH] tty: Remove include of screen_info.h from tty.hJon Smirl2006-07-101-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | screen_info.h doesn't have anything to do with the tty layer and shouldn't be included by tty.h. This patches removes the include and modifies all users to directly include screen_info.h. struct screen_info is mainly used to communicate with the console drivers in drivers/video/console. Note that this patch touches every arch and I have no way of testing it. If there is a mistake the worst thing that will happen is a compile error.
