As &hc->lock is acquired by both timer _hfcpci_softirq() and hardirq
hfcpci_int(), the timer should disable irq before lock acquisition
otherwise deadlock could happen if the timmer is preemtped by the hadr irq.
Possible deadlock scenario:
hfcpci_softirq() (timer)
-> _hfcpci_softirq()
-> spin_lock(&hc->lock);
<irq interruption>
-> hfcpci_int()
-> spin_lock(&hc->lock); (deadlock here)
This flaw was found by an experimental static analysis tool I am developing
for irq-related deadlock.
The tentative patch fixes the potential deadlock by spin_lock_irq()
in timer.

In a future patch HAS_IOPORT=n will result in inb()/outb() and friends
not being declared. We thus need to add HAS_IOPORT as dependency for
those drivers using them. With that the !S390 dependency on ISDN can be
removed as all drivers without HAS_IOPORT requirement now build.

Remove pci_clear_master to simplify the code,
the bus-mastering is also cleared in do_pci_disable_device,

enqueue the tx_skb and rx_skb, at last calling __skb_queue_purge() to

It is not allowed to call kfree_skb() or consume_skb() from hardware

It should use dev_kfree_skb_irq() or dev_consume_skb_irq() instead.
The difference between them is free reason, dev_kfree_skb_irq() means
the SKB is dropped in error and dev_consume_skb_irq() means the SKB
is consumed in normal.
skb_queue_purge() is called under spin_lock_irqsave() in hfcusb_l2l1D(),
kfree_skb() is called in it, to fix this, use skb_queue_splice_init()
to move the dch->squeue to a free queue, also enqueue the tx_skb and
rx_skb, at last calling __skb_queue_purge() to free the SKBs afer unlock.
In tx_iso_complete(), dev_kfree_skb() is called to consume the transmitted
SKB, so replace it with dev_consume_skb_irq().

The class is set in mISDN_register_device(), but if device_add() returns
error, it will lead to delete a device without added, fix this by using
device_is_registered() to check if the device is registered.

The function hfcpci_softirq() is a timer handler. If it
is running, the timer_pending() will return 0 and the
del_timer_sync() in HFC_cleanup() will not be executed.
As a result, the use-after-free bug will happen. The

The device is deallocated is position [1] and used in
position [2].
Fix by removing the "timer_pending" check in HFC_cleanup(),
which makes sure that the hfcpci_softirq() have finished
before the resource is deallocated.

'nj_setup' in netjet.c might fail with -EIO and in this case
'card->irq' is initialized and is bigger than zero. A subsequent call to
'nj_release' will free the irq that has not been requested.
Fix this bug by deleting the previous assignment to 'card->irq' and just
keep the assignment before 'request_irq'.

Modify return type of hfcusb_ph_info to int, so that we can pass error
value up the call stack when allocation of ph_info fails. Also change
three of four call sites to actually account for the memory failure.
The fourth, in ph_state_nt, is infeasible to change as it is in turn
called by ph_state which is used as a function pointer argument to
mISDN_initdchannel, which would necessitate changing its signature
and updating all the places where it is used (too many).
Fixes original flawed commit (38d22659803a) from the University of
Minnesota.

commits from them have been recently re-reviewed to ensure if they were
correct or not.
Upon review, this commit was found to be incorrect for the reasons
below, so it must be reverted. It will be fixed up "correctly" in a
later kernel change.
While it looks like the original change is correct, it is not, as none
of the setup actually happens, and the error value is not propagated
upwards.

Move hw->cfg.mode and hw->addr.mode assignments from hw->ci->cfg_mode
and hw->ci->addr_mode respectively, to be before the subsequent checks
for memory IO mode (and possible ioremap calls in this case).
Also introduce ioremap error checks at both locations. This allows
resources to be properly freed on ioremap failure, as when the caller
of setup_io then subsequently calls release_io via its error path,
release_io can now correctly determine the mode as it has been set
before the ioremap call.
Finally, refactor release_io function so that it will call
release_mem_region in the memory IO case, regardless of whether or not
hw->cfg.p/hw->addr.p are NULL. This means resources are then properly
released on failure.
This properly implements the original reverted commit (d721fe99f6ad)
from the University of Minnesota, whilst also implementing the ioremap
check for the hw->ci->cfg_mode if block as well.

The original commit was incorrect, it should have never have used
"unlikely()" and if it ever does trigger, resources are left grabbed.
Given there are no users for this code around, I'll just revert this and
leave it "as is" as the odds that ioremap() will ever fail here is
horrendiously low.

This module's remove path calls del_timer(). However, that function
does not wait until the timer handler finishes. This means that the
timer handler may still be running after the driver's remove function
has finished, which would result in a use-after-free.
Fix by calling del_timer_sync(), which makes sure the timer handler
has finished, and unable to re-schedule itself.

The patch has been generated with the coccinelle script below and has been
hand modified to replace GFP_ with a correct flag.
It has been compile tested.
When memory is allocated in 'setup_hw()' (hfcpci.c) GFP_KERNEL can be used
because it is called from the probe function and no lock is taken.
The call chain is:
hfc_probe()
--> setup_card()
--> setup_hw()
When memory is allocated in 'inittiger()' (netjet.c) GFP_ATOMIC must be
used because a spin_lock is taken by the caller (i.e. 'nj_init_card()')
This is also consistent with the other allocations done in the function.

Since linux 4.9 it is not possible to use buffers on the stack for DMA transfers.
During usb probe the driver crashes with "transfer buffer is on stack" message.
This fix k-allocates a buffer to be used on "read_reg_atomic", which is a macro
that calls "usb_control_msg" under the hood.

start_isoc_chain()
In start_isoc_chain(), usb_alloc_urb() on line 1392 may fail
and return NULL. At this time, fifo->iso[i].urb is assigned to NULL.
Then, fifo->iso[i].urb is used at some places, such as:
LINE 1405: fill_isoc_urb(fifo->iso[i].urb, ...)
urb->number_of_packets = num_packets;
urb->transfer_flags = URB_ISO_ASAP;
urb->actual_length = 0;
urb->interval = interval;
LINE 1416: fifo->iso[i].urb->...
LINE 1419: fifo->iso[i].urb->...
Thus, possible null-pointer dereferences may occur.
To fix these bugs, "continue" is added to avoid using fifo->iso[i].urb
when it is NULL.
These bugs are found by a static analysis tool STCheck written by us.

When isdn4linux came up in the context of another patch series, I
remembered that we had discussed removing it a while ago.
It turns out that the suggestion from Karsten Keil wa to remove I4L
in 2018 after the last public ISDN networks are shut down. This has
happened now (with a very small number of exceptions), so I guess it's
time to try again.
We currently have three ISDN stacks in the kernel: the original
isdn4linux (with the hisax driver), the newer CAPI (with four drivers),
and finally the mISDN stack (supporting roughly the same hardware as
hisax).
As far as I can tell, anyone using ISDN with mainline kernel drivers in
the past few years uses mISDN, and this is typically used for voice-only
PBX installations that don't require a public network.
The older stacks support additional features for data networks, but those
typically make no sense any more if there is no network to connect to.
My proposal for this time is to kill off isdn4linux entirely, as it seems
to have been unusable for quite a while. This code has been abandoned
for many years and it does cause problems for treewide maintenance as
it tends to do everything that we try to stop doing.
Birger Harzenetter mentioned that is is still using i4l in order to
make use of the 'divert' feature that is not part of mISDN, but has
otherwise moved on to mISDN for normal operation, like apparently
everyone else.
CAPI in turn is not quite as obsolete, but two of the drivers (avm
and hysdn) don't seem to be used at all, while another one (gigaset)
will stop being maintained as Paul Bolle is no longer able to
test it after the network gets shut down in September.
All three are now moved into drivers/staging to let others speak
up in case there are remaining users.
This leaves Bluetooth CMTP as the only remaining user of CAPI, but
Marcel Holtmann wishes to keep maintaining it.

Unfortunately, Karsten Keil as the maintainer has not participated in

I tried to find any indication of whether the capi drivers are still in
use, and have not found anything from a long time ago.
With public ISDN networks almost completely shut down over the past 12
months, there is very little you can actually do with this hardware. The
main remaining use case would be to connect ISDN voice phones to an
in-house installation with Asterisk or LCR, but anyone trying this in
turn seems to be using either the mISDN driver stack, or out-of-tree
drivers from the hardware vendors.
I may of course have missed something, so I would suggest moving these
three drivers (avm, hysdn, gigaset) into drivers/staging/ just in case
someone still uses them.
If nobody complains, we can remove them entirely in six months, or
otherwise move the core code and any drivers that are still needed back
into drivers/isdn.
As Paul Bolle notes, he is still testing the gigaset driver as long as
he can, but the Dutch ISDN network will be shut down in September 2019,
which puts an end to that.
Marcel Holtmann still maintains the Bluetooth CMTP profile and wants to
keep that alive, so the actual CAPI subsystem code remains in place for
now, after all other drivers are gone, CMTP and CAPI can be merged into
a single driver directory.
