After m68k's task_thread_info() doesn't refer to current,
it's possible to remove sched.h from interrupt.h and not break m68k!
Many thanks to Heiko Carstens for allowing this.

From: Ilkka Virta <itvirta@iki.fi>
In the lockup situation the driver seems to go off in an eternal storm
of interrupts right after calling request_irq(). It doesn't actually
do anything interesting in the interrupt handler. Since connecting the link
afterwards works, something later in initialization must fix this.
Looking at gem_do_start() and gem_open(), it seems that the only thing
done while opening the device after the request_irq(), is a call to
napi_enable().
I don't know what the ordering requirements are for the
initialization, but I boldly tried to move the napi_enable() call
inside gem_do_start() before the link state is checked and interrupts
subsequently enabled, and it seems to work for me. Doesn't even break
anything too obvious...

Following the removal of the unused struct net_device * parameter from

When the napi api was changed to separate its 1:1 binding to the net_device

vestigual net_device structure parameter. This patch cleans up that api by

From: Hermann Lauer <Hermann.Lauer@iwr.uni-heidelberg.de>
Attached is a patch which improves the output of ethtool (see below)
to some sensefull values with a sungem fibre card which uses the
sungem interal pcs connected to a serdes chip. The seriallink case in
the driver is untouched.
Most values are hardcoded, because gigabit fibre autoneg is anyways
limited and the driver don't really support much at the moment with
that hardware.

As reported by Hermann Lauer, PCS PHY support in the sungem
driver simply doesn't work.
When the chip is reset due to open, or some other similar operation,
the PCS is reset too but we don't program it back into a running
state. The result is no link when the device is brought up.
This partially rectifies the situation for the moment, by kicking
the PCS after a sungem chip reset so that it will renegotiate and
be re-enabled again.
The behavior is still a little bit dodgy as the added renegotiate
make the link take some time after bringing the interface up,
but this is a significant improvement in that things actually work
now :-)
Based almost entirely upon an initial patch by Hermann.

We have some reasons to kill netdev->priv:
1. netdev->priv is equal to netdev_priv().
2. netdev_priv() wraps the calculation of netdev->priv's offset, obviously
netdev_priv() is more flexible than netdev->priv.
But we cann't kill netdev->priv, because so many drivers reference to it
directly.
This patch is a safe convert for netdev->priv to netdev_priv(netdev).
Since all of the netdev->priv is only for read.
But it is too big to be sent in one mail.
I split it to 4 parts and make every part smaller than 100,000 bytes,
which is max size allowed by vger.

The generic packet receive code takes care of setting
netdev->last_rx when necessary, for the sake of the
bonding ARP monitor.
Drivers need not do it any more.
Some cases had to be skipped over because the drivers
were making use of the ->last_rx value themselves.

sungem's gem_reset_task() will unconditionally try to disable NAPI even
when it's called while the interface is not operating and hence the NAPI
struct isn't enabled. Make napi_disable() depend on gp->running.
Also removes a superfluous test of gp->running in the same function.

Commit bea3348e (the NAPI changes) made sungem unconditionally enable
NAPI when resuming and unconditionally disable when suspending, this,
however, makes napi_disable() hang when suspending when the interface
was taken down before suspend because taking the interface down also
disables NAPI. This patch makes touching the napi struct in
suspend/resume code paths depend on having the interface up, thereby
fixing the hang on suspend.
The patch also moves the napi_disable() in gem_close() under the lock so
that the NAPI state is always modified atomically together with the
"opened" variable.

Several devices have multiple independant RX queues per net
device, and some have a single interrupt doorbell for several
queues.
In either case, it's easier to support layouts like that if the
structure representing the poll is independant from the net
device itself.
The signature of the ->poll() call back goes from:
int foo_poll(struct net_device *dev, int *budget)
to
int foo_poll(struct napi_struct *napi, int budget)
The caller is returned the number of RX packets processed (or
the number of "NAPI credits" consumed if you want to get
abstract). The callee no longer messes around bumping
dev->quota, *budget, etc. because that is all handled in the
caller upon return.
The napi_struct is to be embedded in the device driver private data
structures.
Furthermore, it is the driver's responsibility to disable all NAPI
instances in it's ->stop() device close handler. Since the
napi_struct is privatized into the driver's private data structures,
only the driver knows how to get at all of the napi_struct instances
it may have per-device.

Michael Chan, Jeff Garzik, and Jamal Hadi Salim.

This patch adds support for a few more PHYs used by Apple and fixes
advertising and detecting of Pause (we were missing setting the bit in
MII_ADVERTISE and weren't testing in LPA for all PHYs).
Note that I currently only advertise pause, not asymetric pause. I
don't know for sure the details there, I suppose I should read a bit
more 802.3 references, and I don't now what sungem is capable of, but
I noticed the PCS code (originated from you) does the same.

Maintain a per-CPU global "struct pt_regs *" variable which can be used instead
of passing regs around manually through all ~1800 interrupt handlers in the
Linux kernel.
The regs pointer is used in few places, but it potentially costs both stack
space and code to pass it around. On the FRV arch, removing the regs parameter
from all the genirq function results in a 20% speed up of the IRQ exit path
(ie: from leaving timer_interrupt() to leaving do_IRQ()).
Where appropriate, an arch may override the generic storage facility and do
something different with the variable. On FRV, for instance, the address is
maintained in GR28 at all times inside the kernel as part of general exception
handling.
Having looked over the code, it appears that the parameter may be handed down
through up to twenty or so layers of functions. Consider a USB character
device attached to a USB hub, attached to a USB controller that posts its
interrupts through a cascaded auxiliary interrupt controller. A character
device driver may want to pass regs to the sysrq handler through the input
layer which adds another few layers of parameter passing.
I've build this code with allyesconfig for x86_64 and i386. I've runtested the
main part of the code on FRV and i386, though I can't test most of the drivers.
I've also done partial conversion for powerpc and MIPS - these at least compile
with minimal configurations.
This will affect all archs. Mostly the changes should be relatively easy.
Take do_IRQ(), store the regs pointer at the beginning, saving the old one:
struct pt_regs *old_regs = set_irq_regs(regs);
And put the old one back at the end:
set_irq_regs(old_regs);
Don't pass regs through to generic_handle_irq() or __do_IRQ().
In timer_interrupt(), this sort of change will be necessary:
- update_process_times(user_mode(regs));
- profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING, regs);
+ update_process_times(user_mode(get_irq_regs()));
+ profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING);
I'd like to move update_process_times()'s use of get_irq_regs() into itself,
except that i386, alone of the archs, uses something other than user_mode().
Some notes on the interrupt handling in the drivers:
(*) input_dev() is now gone entirely. The regs pointer is no longer stored in
the input_dev struct.
(*) finish_unlinks() in drivers/usb/host/ohci-q.c needs checking. It does
something different depending on whether it's been supplied with a regs
pointer or not.
(*) Various IRQ handler function pointers have been moved to type
irq_handler_t.
