| * NLS: improve UTF8 -> UTF16 string conversion routineAlan Stern2011-11-181-1/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The utf8s_to_utf16s conversion routine needs to be improved. Unlike its utf16s_to_utf8s sibling, it doesn't accept arguments specifying the maximum length of the output buffer or the endianness of its 16-bit output. This patch (as1501) adds the two missing arguments, and adjusts the only two places in the kernel where the function is called. A follow-on patch will add a third caller that does utilize the new capabilities. The two conversion routines are still annoyingly inconsistent in the way they handle invalid byte combinations. But that's a subject for a different patch. Signed-off-by: Alan Stern <stern@rowland.harvard.edu> CC: Clemens Ladisch <clemens@ladisch.de> Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@suse.de>

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | FAT16 support maximum 4GB vol/file size with 64KB cluster size. Win NT/XP/7 increased the maximum cluster size to 64KB, and file/vol size increased 4GB also. Although increasing, the file size of linux FAT is still limited at 2GB. * | fs: push i_mutex and filemap_write_and_wait down into ->fsync() handlersJosef Bacik2011-07-212-3/+4
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Btrfs needs to be able to control how filemap_write_and_wait_range() is called in fsync to make it less of a painful operation, so push down taking i_mutex and the calling of filemap_write_and_wait() down into the ->fsync() handlers. Some file systems can drop taking the i_mutex altogether it seems, like ext3 and ocfs2. For correctness sake I just pushed everything down in all cases to make sure that we keep the current behavior the same for everybody, and then each individual fs maintainer can make up their mind about what to do from there. * | fs: simplify the blockdev_direct_IO prototypeChristoph Hellwig2011-07-211-2/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Simple filesystems always pass inode->i_sb_bdev as the block device argument, and never need a end_io handler. Let's simply things for them and for my grepping activity by dropping these arguments. The only thing not falling into that scheme is ext4, which passes and end_io handler without needing special flags (yet), but given how messy the direct I/O code there is use of __blockdev_direct_IO in one instead of two out of three cases isn't going to make a large difference anyway. * | fs: move inode_dio_wait calls into ->setattrChristoph Hellwig2011-07-211-0/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Let filesystems handle waiting for direct I/O requests themselves instead of doing it beforehand. This means filesystem-specific locks to prevent new dio referenes from appearing can be held. This is important to allow generalizing i_dio_count to non-DIO_LOCKING filesystems. * fs: dcache reduce branches in lookup pathNick Piggin2011-01-073-9/+9
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | Reduce some branches and memory accesses in dcache lookup by adding dentry flags to indicate common d_ops are set, rather than having to check them. This saves a pointer memory access (dentry->d_op) in common path lookup situations, and saves another pointer load and branch in cases where we have d_op but not the particular operation. Patched with: git grep -E '[.>]([[:space:]])*d_op([[:space:]])*=' | xargs sed -e 's/\([^\t ]*\)->d_op = \(.*\);/d_set_d_op(\1, \2);/' -e 's/\([^\t ]*\)\.d_op = \(.*\);/d_set_d_op(\&\1, \2);/' -i Signed-off-by: Nick Piggin <npiggin@kernel.dk>
* fs: icache RCU free inodesNick Piggin2011-01-071-1/+8
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | RCU free the struct inode. This will allow: - Subsequent store-free path walking patch. The inode must be consulted for permissions when walking, so an RCU inode reference is a must. - sb_inode_list_lock to be moved inside i_lock because sb list walkers who want to take i_lock no longer need to take sb_inode_list_lock to walk the list in the first place. This will simplify and optimize locking. - Could remove some nested trylock loops in dcache code - Could potentially simplify things a bit in VM land. Do not need to take the page lock to follow page->mapping. The downsides of this is the performance cost of using RCU. In a simple creat/unlink microbenchmark, performance drops by about 10% due to inability to reuse cache-hot slab objects. As iterations increase and RCU freeing starts kicking over, this increases to about 20%. In cases where inode lifetimes are longer (ie. many inodes may be allocated during the average life span of a single inode), a lot of this cache reuse is not applicable, so the regression caused by this patch is smaller. The cache-hot regression could largely be avoided by using SLAB_DESTROY_BY_RCU, however this adds some complexity to list walking and store-free path walking, so I prefer to implement this at a later date, if it is shown to be a win in real situations. I haven't found a regression in any non-micro benchmark so I doubt it will be a problem. Signed-off-by: Nick Piggin <npiggin@kernel.dk>

| | | | | | | | | | | | | Change d_compare so it may be called from lock-free RCU lookups. This does put significant restrictions on what may be done from the callback, however there don't seem to have been any problems with in-tree fses. If some strange use case pops up that _really_ cannot cope with the rcu-walk rules, we can just add new rcu-unaware callbacks, which would cause name lookup to drop out of rcu-walk mode. For in-tree filesystems, this is just a mechanical change. Signed-off-by: Nick Piggin <npiggin@kernel.dk>

| * block: remove BLKDEV_IFL_WAITChristoph Hellwig2010-09-161-2/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | All the blkdev_issue_* helpers can only sanely be used for synchronous caller. To issue cache flushes or barriers asynchronously the caller needs to set up a bio by itself with a completion callback to move the asynchronous state machine ahead. So drop the BLKDEV_IFL_WAIT flag that is always specified when calling blkdev_issue_* and also remove the now unused flags argument to blkdev_issue_flush and blkdev_issue_zeroout. For blkdev_issue_discard we need to keep it for the secure discard flag, which gains a more descriptive name and loses the bitops vs flag confusion. | * block: remove the BH_Eopnotsupp flagChristoph Hellwig2010-09-101-4/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This flag was only set for barrier buffers, which we don't submit anymore. Signed-off-by: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Signed-off-by: Tejun Heo <tj@kernel.org> Signed-off-by: Jens Axboe <jaxboe@fusionio.com>
| * fat: do not send discards as barriersChristoph Hellwig2010-09-101-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | fat already uses synchronous discards, no need to add I/O barriers. Signed-off-by: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Signed-off-by: Tejun Heo <tj@kernel.org> Signed-off-by: Jens Axboe <jaxboe@fusionio.com>
