* xfs: decouple inode and bmap btree header filesDave Chinner2013-10-231-1/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Currently the xfs_inode.h header has a dependency on the definition of the BMAP btree records as the inode fork includes an array of xfs_bmbt_rec_host_t objects in it's definition. Move all the btree format definitions from xfs_btree.h, xfs_bmap_btree.h, xfs_alloc_btree.h and xfs_ialloc_btree.h to xfs_format.h to continue the process of centralising the on-disk format definitions. With this done, the xfs inode definitions are no longer dependent on btree header files. The enables a massive culling of unnecessary includes, with close to 200 #include directives removed from the XFS kernel code base. * xfs: create a shared header file for format-related informationDave Chinner2013-10-231-2/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | All of the buffer operations structures are needed to be exported for xfs_db, so move them all to a common location rather than spreading them all over the place. They are verifying the on-disk format, so while xfs_format.h might be a good place, it is not part of the on disk format. Hence we need to create a new header file that we centralise these related definitions. Start by moving the bffer operations structures, and then also move all the other definitions that have crept into xfs_log_format.h and xfs_format.h as there was no other shared header file to put them in. * xfs: Inode create item recoveryDave Chinner2013-06-271-0/+8
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | When we find a icreate transaction, we need to get and initialise the buffers in the range that has been passed. Extract and verify the information in the item record, then loop over the range initialising and issuing the buffer writes delayed. Support an arbitrary size range to initialise so that in future when we allocate inodes in much larger chunks all kernels that understand this transaction can still recover them. * xfs: convert buffer verifiers to an ops structure.Dave Chinner2012-11-161-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | To separate the verifiers from iodone functions and associate read and write verifiers at the same time, introduce a buffer verifier operations structure to the xfs_buf. This avoids the need for assigning the write verifier, clearing the iodone function and re-running ioend processing in the read verifier, and gets rid of the nasty "b_pre_io" name for the write verifier function pointer. If we ever need to, it will also be easier to add further content specific callbacks to a buffer with an ops structure in place. We also avoid needing to export verifier functions, instead we can simply export the ops structures for those that are needed outside the function they are defined in. This patch also fixes a directory block readahead verifier issue it exposed. This patch also adds ops callbacks to the inode/alloc btree blocks initialised by growfs. These will need more work before they will work with CRCs. Signed-off-by: Dave Chinner <dchinner@redhat.com> Reviewed-by: Phil White <pwhite@sgi.com> Signed-off-by: Ben Myers <bpm@sgi.com>

* xfs: rationalize xfs_inobt_lookup*Christoph Hellwig2009-09-011-11/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Currenly we have a xfs_inobt_lookup* variant for each comparism direction, and all these get all three fields of the inobt records passed, while the common case is just looking for the inode number and we have only marginally more callers than xfs_inobt_lookup* variants. So opencode a direct call to xfs_btree_lookup for the single case where we need all fields, and replace xfs_inobt_lookup* with a xfs_inobt_looku that just takes the inode number and the direction for all other callers. | | | | | | | | | | | Most callers of xfs_inobt_get_rec need to fill a xfs_inobt_rec_incore_t, and those who don't yet are fine with a xfs_inobt_rec_incore_t, instead of the three individual variables, too. * [XFS] Lazy Superblock CountersDavid Chinner2007-07-141-0/+10
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | When we have a couple of hundred transactions on the fly at once, they all typically modify the on disk superblock in some way. create/unclink/mkdir/rmdir modify inode counts, allocation/freeing modify free block counts. When these counts are modified in a transaction, they must eventually lock the superblock buffer and apply the mods. The buffer then remains locked until the transaction is committed into the incore log buffer. The result of this is that with enough transactions on the fly the incore superblock buffer becomes a bottleneck. The result of contention on the incore superblock buffer is that transaction rates fall - the more pressure that is put on the superblock buffer, the slower things go. The key to removing the contention is to not require the superblock fields in question to be locked. We do that by not marking the superblock dirty in the transaction. IOWs, we modify the incore superblock but do not modify the cached superblock buffer. In short, we do not log superblock modifications to critical fields in the superblock on every transaction. In fact we only do it just before we write the superblock to disk every sync period or just before unmount. This creates an interesting problem - if we don't log or write out the fields in every transaction, then how do the values get recovered after a crash? the answer is simple - we keep enough duplicate, logged information in other structures that we can reconstruct the correct count after log recovery has been performed. It is the AGF and AGI structures that contain the duplicate information; after recovery, we walk every AGI and AGF and sum their individual counters to get the correct value, and we do a transaction into the log to correct them. An optimisation of this is that if we have a clean unmount record, we know the value in the superblock is correct, so we can avoid the summation walk under normal conditions and so mount/recovery times do not change under normal operation. One wrinkle that was discovered during development was that the blocks used in the freespace btrees are never accounted for in the AGF counters. This was once a valid optimisation to make; when the filesystem is full, the free space btrees are empty and consume no space. Hence when it matters, the "accounting" is correct. But that means the when we do the AGF summations, we would not have a correct count and xfs_check would complain. Hence a new counter was added to track the number of blocks used by the free space btrees. This is an *on-disk format change*. As a result of this, lazy superblock counters are a mkfs option and at the moment on linux there is no way to convert an old filesystem. This is possible - xfs_db can be used to twiddle the right bits and then xfs_repair will do the format conversion for you. Similarly, you can convert backwards as well. At some point we'll add functionality to xfs_admin to do the bit twiddling easily.... Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
