* x86/retpoline: Make sure there are no unconverted return thunks due to KCSANJosh Poimboeuf2023-10-201-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Enabling CONFIG_KCSAN leads to unconverted, default return thunks to remain after patching. As David Kaplan describes in his debugging of the issue, it is caused by a couple of KCSAN-generated constructors which aren't processed by objtool: "When KCSAN is enabled, GCC generates lots of constructor functions named _sub_I_00099_0 which call __tsan_init and then return. The returns in these are generally annotated normally by objtool and fixed up at runtime. But objtool runs on vmlinux.o and vmlinux.o does not include a couple of object files that are in vmlinux, like init/version-timestamp.o and .vmlinux.export.o, both of which contain _sub_I_00099_0 functions. As a result, the returns in these functions are not annotated, and the panic occurs when we call one of them in do_ctors and it uses the default return thunk. This difference can be seen by counting the number of these functions in the object files: $ objdump -d vmlinux.o|grep -c "<_sub_I_00099_0>:" 2601 $ objdump -d vmlinux|grep -c "<_sub_I_00099_0>:" 2603 If these functions are only run during kernel boot, there is no speculation concern." Fix it by disabling KCSAN on version-timestamp.o and .vmlinux.export.o so the extra functions don't get generated. KASAN and GCOV are already disabled for those files. * kbuild: Fix CFI failures with GCOVSami Tolvanen2023-06-251-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | With GCOV_PROFILE_ALL, Clang injects __llvm_gcov_* functions to each object file, and the functions are indirectly called during boot. However, when code is injected to object files that are not part of vmlinux.o, it's also not processed by objtool, which breaks CFI hash randomization as the hashes in these files won't be included in the .cfi_sites section and thus won't be randomized. Similarly to commit 42633ed852de ("kbuild: Fix CFI hash randomization with KASAN"), disable GCOV for .vmlinux.export.o and init/version-timestamp.o to avoid emitting unnecessary functions to object files that don't otherwise have executable code. * kbuild: Fix CFI hash randomization with KASANSami Tolvanen2023-01-141-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Clang emits a asan.module_ctor constructor to each object file when KASAN is enabled, and these functions are indirectly called in do_ctors. With CONFIG_CFI_CLANG, the compiler also emits a CFI type hash before each address-taken global function so they can pass indirect call checks. However, in commit 0c3e806ec0f9 ("x86/cfi: Add boot time hash randomization"), x86 implemented boot time hash randomization, which relies on the .cfi_sites section generated by objtool. As objtool is run against vmlinux.o instead of individual object files with X86_KERNEL_IBT (enabled by default), CFI types in object files that are not part of vmlinux.o end up not being included in .cfi_sites, and thus won't get randomized and trip CFI when called. Only .vmlinux.export.o and init/version-timestamp.o are linked into vmlinux separately from vmlinux.o. As these files don't contain any functions, disable KASAN for both of them to avoid breaking hash randomization. * kbuild: build init/built-in.a just onceMasahiro Yamada2022-09-281-13/+42
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Kbuild builds init/built-in.a twice; first during the ordinary directory descending, second from scripts/link-vmlinux.sh. We do this because UTS_VERSION contains the build version and the timestamp. We cannot update it during the normal directory traversal since we do not yet know if we need to update vmlinux. UTS_VERSION is temporarily calculated, but omitted from the update check. Otherwise, vmlinux would be rebuilt every time. When Kbuild results in running link-vmlinux.sh, it increments the version number in the .version file and takes the timestamp at that time to really fix UTS_VERSION. However, updating the same file twice is a footgun. To avoid nasty timestamp issues, all build artifacts that depend on init/built-in.a are atomically generated in link-vmlinux.sh, where some of them do not need rebuilding. To fix this issue, this commit changes as follows: [1] Split UTS_VERSION out to include/generated/utsversion.h from include/generated/compile.h include/generated/utsversion.h is generated just before the vmlinux link. It is generated under include/generated/ because some decompressors (s390, x86) use UTS_VERSION. [2] Split init_uts_ns and linux_banner out to init/version-timestamp.c from init/version.c init_uts_ns and linux_banner contain UTS_VERSION. During the ordinary directory descending, they are compiled with __weak and used to determine if vmlinux needs relinking. Just before the vmlinux link, they are compiled without __weak to embed the real version and timestamp. Signed-off-by: Masahiro Yamada <masahiroy@kernel.org>

* kbuild: do not quote string values in include/config/auto.confMasahiro Yamada2022-01-081-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The previous commit fixed up all shell scripts to not include include/config/auto.conf. Now that include/config/auto.conf is only included by Makefiles, we can change it into a more Make-friendly form. Previously, Kconfig output string values enclosed with double-quotes (both in the .config and include/config/auto.conf): CONFIG_X="foo bar" Unlike shell, Make handles double-quotes (and single-quotes as well) verbatim. We must rip them off when used. There are some patterns: [1] $(patsubst "%",%,$(CONFIG_X)) [2] $(CONFIG_X:"%"=%) [3] $(subst ",,$(CONFIG_X)) [4] $(shell echo $(CONFIG_X)) These are not only ugly, but also fragile. [1] and [2] do not work if the value contains spaces, like CONFIG_X=" foo bar " [3] does not work correctly if the value contains double-quotes like CONFIG_X="foo\"bar" [4] seems to work better, but has a cost of forking a process. Anyway, quoted strings were always PITA for our Makefiles. This commit changes Kconfig to stop quoting in include/config/auto.conf. * preempt: Restore preemption model selection configsValentin Schneider2021-11-111-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Commit c597bfddc9e9 ("sched: Provide Kconfig support for default dynamic preempt mode") changed the selectable config names for the preemption model. This means a config file must now select CONFIG_PREEMPT_BEHAVIOUR=y rather than CONFIG_PREEMPT=y to get a preemptible kernel. This means all arch config files would need to be updated - right now they'll all end up with the default CONFIG_PREEMPT_NONE_BEHAVIOUR. Rather than touch a good hundred of config files, restore usage of CONFIG_PREEMPT{_NONE, _VOLUNTARY}. Make them configure: o The build-time preemption model when !PREEMPT_DYNAMIC o The default boot-time preemption model when PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Add siblings of those configs with the _BUILD suffix to unconditionally designate the build-time preemption model (PREEMPT_DYNAMIC is built with the "highest" preemption model it supports, aka PREEMPT). Downstream configs should by now all be depending / selected by CONFIG_PREEMPTION rather than CONFIG_PREEMPT, so only a few sites need patching up. * License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no licenseGreg Kroah-Hartman2017-11-021-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files. The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s) to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was: - Files considered eligible had to be source code files. - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5 lines of source - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5 lines). All documentation files were explicitly excluded. The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license identifiers to apply. - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was considered to have no license information in it, and the top level COPYING file license applied. For non */uapi/* files that summary was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 11139 and resulted in the first patch in this series. If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930 and resulted in the second patch in this series. - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in it (per prior point). Results summary: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------ GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270 GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17 LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15 GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14 ((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5 LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4 LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1 and that resulted in the third patch in this series. - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became the concluded license(s). - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a license but the other didn't, or they both detected different licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred. - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics). - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier, the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later in time. In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so they are related. Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks in about 15000 files. In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the correct identifier. Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch version early this week with: - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected license ids and scores - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+ files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the different types of files to be modified. These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to generate the patches. Patch was tested on following architectures: alpha, arm, i386, x86_64, mips, sparc, sparc64, ia64, m68k Test was simple to do a defconfig build, apply the patch and check that nothing got rebuild. * [PATCH] disable init/initramfs.cJean-Paul Saman2007-02-111-1/+6
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The file init/initramfs.c is always compiled and linked in the kernel vmlinux even when BLK_DEV_RAM and BLK_DEV_INITRD are disabled and the system isn't using any form of an initramfs or initrd. In this situation the code is only used to unpack a (static) default initial rootfilesystem. The current init/initramfs.c code. usr/initramfs_data.o compiles to a size of ~15 kbytes. Disabling BLK_DEV_RAM and BLK_DEV_INTRD shrinks the kernel code size with ~60 Kbytes. This patch avoids compiling in the code and data for initramfs support if CONFIG_BLK_DEV_INITRD is not defined. Instead of the initramfs code and data it uses a small routine in init/noinitramfs.c to setup an initial static default environment for mounting a rootfilesystem later on in the kernel initialisation process. The new code is: 164 bytes of size. The patch is separated in two parts: 1) doesn't compile initramfs code when CONFIG_BLK_DEV_INITRD is not set 2) changing all plaforms vmlinux.lds.S files to not reserve an area of PAGE_SIZE when CONFIG_BLK_DEV_INITRD is not set. * [PATCH] build compile.h earlierAndrew Morton2006-12-221-9/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | compile.h is created super-late in the build. But proc_misc.c want to include it, and it's generally not sane to have a header file in include/linux be created at the end of the build: it's either not present or, worse, wrong for most of the build. So the patch arranges for compile.h to be built at the start of the build process. It also consolidates the compile.h rules with those for version.h and utsname.h, so they all get built together. I hope. My chances of having got this right are about 2%. Cc: Sam Ravnborg <sam@ravnborg.org> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
* [PATCH] Fix linux banner utsname informationHerbert Poetzl2006-12-081-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | utsname information is shown in the linux banner, which also is used for /proc/version (which can have different utsname values inside a uts namespaces). this patch makes the varying data arguments and changes the string to a format string, using those arguments. * Linux-2.6.12-rc2v2.6.12-rc2Linus Torvalds2005-04-171-0/+28
Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
