L3PMCx0AC and L3PMCx0AD, used in l3_xi_sampled_latency* events, have a
quirk that requires them to be programmed with SliceId set to 0x3.
Without this, the events do not count at all and affects dependent
metrics such as l3_read_miss_latency.
If ThreadMask is not specified, the amd-uncore driver internally sets
ThreadMask to 0x3, EnAllCores to 0x1 and EnAllSlices to 0x1 but does
not set SliceId. Since SliceId must also be set to 0x3 in this case,
specify all the other fields explicitly.
E.g.
$ sudo perf stat -e l3_xi_sampled_latency.all,l3_xi_sampled_latency_requests.all -a sleep 1
Before:
Performance counter stats for 'system wide':
0 l3_xi_sampled_latency.all
0 l3_xi_sampled_latency_requests.all
1.005155399 seconds time elapsed
After:
Performance counter stats for 'system wide':
921,446 l3_xi_sampled_latency.all
54,210 l3_xi_sampled_latency_requests.all
1.005664472 seconds time elapsed

Prior to this patch '0' would be dropped as the config values default
to 0. Some json values are hex and the string '0' wouldn't match '0x0'
as zero. Add a more robust is_zero test to drop these event terms.
When encoding numbers as hex, if the number is between 0 and 9
inclusive then don't add a 0x prefix.
Update test expectations for these changes.
On x86 this reduces the event/metric C string by 58,411 bytes.

Make the jevents parser aware of the Unified Memory Controller (UMC) PMU
and add events taken from Section 8.2.1 "UMC Performance Monitor Events"
of the Processor Programming Reference (PPR) for AMD Family 19h Model 11h
processors. The events capture UMC command activity such as CAS, ACTIVATE,
PRECHARGE etc. while the metrics derive data bus utilization and memory
bandwidth out of these events.

Python 3.6 introduced a DeprecationWarning for invalid escape sequences.
This is upgraded to a SyntaxWarning in Python 3.12, and will eventually
be a syntax error.
Fix these now to get ahead of it before it's an error.

strcmp_cpuid_str performs regular expression comparisons and so per
CPUID linear searches over the perf_events_map are expensive. Add a
helper function called map_for_pmu that does the search but also
caches the map specific to a PMU. As the PMU may differ, also cache
the CPUID string so that PMUs with the same CPUID string don't require
the linear search and regular expression comparisons. This speeds
loading PMUs as the search is done once per PMU to find the
appropriate tables.

Running commands such as
# ./perf stat -e cs -- true
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
# ./perf stat -e cpu-clock-- true
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
#
dump core. This should not happen as these events are defined
even when no hardware PMU is available.
Debugging this reveals this call chain:
perf_pmus__find_by_type(type=1)
+--> pmu_read_sysfs(core_only=false)
+--> perf_pmu__find2(dirfd=3, name=0x152a113 "software")
+--> perf_pmu__lookup(pmus=0x14f0568 <other_pmus>, dirfd=3,
lookup_name=0x152a113 "software")
+--> perf_pmu__find_events_table (pmu=0x1532130)
Now the pmu is "software" and it tries to find a proper table
generated by the pmu-event generation process for s390:
# cd pmu-events/
# ./jevents.py s390 all /root/linux/tools/perf/pmu-events/arch |\
grep -E '^const struct pmu_table_entry'
const struct pmu_table_entry pmu_events__cf_z10[] = {
const struct pmu_table_entry pmu_events__cf_z13[] = {
const struct pmu_table_entry pmu_metrics__cf_z13[] = {
const struct pmu_table_entry pmu_events__cf_z14[] = {
const struct pmu_table_entry pmu_metrics__cf_z14[] = {
const struct pmu_table_entry pmu_events__cf_z15[] = {
const struct pmu_table_entry pmu_metrics__cf_z15[] = {
const struct pmu_table_entry pmu_events__cf_z16[] = {
const struct pmu_table_entry pmu_metrics__cf_z16[] = {
const struct pmu_table_entry pmu_events__cf_z196[] = {
const struct pmu_table_entry pmu_events__cf_zec12[] = {
const struct pmu_table_entry pmu_metrics__cf_zec12[] = {
const struct pmu_table_entry pmu_events__test_soc_cpu[] = {
const struct pmu_table_entry pmu_metrics__test_soc_cpu[] = {
const struct pmu_table_entry pmu_events__test_soc_sys[] = {
#
However event "software" is not listed, as can be seen in the
generated const struct pmu_events_map pmu_events_map[].
So in function perf_pmu__find_events_table(), the variable
table is initialized to NULL, but never set to a proper
value. The function scans all generated &pmu_events_map[]
tables, but no table matches, because the tables are
s390 CPU Measurement unit specific:
i = 0;
for (;;) {
const struct pmu_events_map *map = &pmu_events_map[i++];
if (!map->arch)
break;
--> the maps are there because the build generated them
if (!strcmp_cpuid_str(map->cpuid, cpuid)) {
table = &map->event_table;
break;
}
--> Since no matching CPU string the table var remains 0x0
}
free(cpuid);
if (!pmu)
return table;
--> The pmu is "software" so it exists and no return
--> and here perf dies because table is 0x0
for (i = 0; i < table->num_pmus; i++) {
...
}
return NULL;
Fix this and do not access the table variable. Instead return 0x0
which is the same return code when the for-loop was not successful.

The previous code assumes an event has either an "event=" or "config"
field at the beginning. For CMN neither of these may be present, as an
event is typically "type=xx,eventid=xxx".
So add EventidCode and NodeType to support CMN event description.
I compared pmu_event.c before and after compiling with JEVENT_ARCH=all,
they are consistent.

The JSON Unit field encodes the name of the PMU to match the events
to. When no name is given it has meant the "cpu" core PMU except for
tests.
On ARM, Intel hybrid and s390 the core PMU is named differently which
means that using "cpu" for this case causes the events not to get
matched to the PMU.
Introduce a new "default_core" string for this case and in the
pmu__name_match force all core PMUs to match this name.

Unit with the PMU name is appended to desc in jevents.py, but on
hybrid platforms it causes the desc to differ from the regular
non-hybrid system with a PMU of 'cpu'. Having differing descs means
the events don't deduplicate. To make the perf list output not differ,
append the Unit on again in the perf list printing code.
On x86 reduces the binary size by 409,600 bytes or about 4%. Update
pmu-events test expectations to match the differently generated
pmu-events.c code.

Cache the JSON events table so that finding it isn't done per

Change the events table find so that when the PMU is given, if the PMU
has no JSON events return null.

jevents stores events sorted by name. Add a find function that will
binary search event names avoiding the need to linearly search through
events.
Add a test in tests/pmu-events.c. If the PMU or event aren't found -1000
is returned. If the event is found but no callback function given, 0 is
returned.
This allows the find function also act as a test for existence.

Pass the PMU to pmu_events_table__for_each_event so that entries that
don't match don't need to be processed by callback.
If a NULL PMU is passed then all PMUs are processed.
'perf bench internals pmu-scan's "Average PMU scanning" performance is
reduced by about 5% on an Intel tigerlake.

Prior to this change a cpuid would map to a list of events where the PMU
would be encoded alongside the event information. This change breaks
apart each group of events so that there is a group per PMU. A new table
is added with the PMU's name and the list of events, the original table
now holding an array of these per PMU tables.
These changes are to make it easier to get per PMU information about
events, rather than the current approach of scanning all events. The
perf binary size with BPF skeletons on x86 is reduced by about 1%. The
unidentified PMU is now always expanded to "cpu".

Recently Ilkka reported that the JSONs for the AmpereOne arm64-based
platform included a dud event which referenced a non-existent arch std
event [0].
Previously in the times of jevents.c, we would raise an exception for this.
This is still invalid, even though the current code just ignores such an
event.
Re-introduce code to raise an exception for when no definition exists to
help catch as many invalid JSONs as possible.

The flex and bison generate header files from the source. When user
specified a build directory with O= option, it'd generate files under
the directory. The build command has -I option to specify the header
include directory.
But the -I option only affects the files included like <...>. Let's
change the flex and bison headers to use it instead of "...".

Introduce a new metricgroup, Default, to tag all the metric groups which
will be collected in the default mode.
Add a new field, DefaultMetricgroupName, in the JSON file to indicate
the real metric group name. It will be printed in the default output
to replace the event names.
There is nothing changed for the output format.
On SPR, both TopdownL1 and TopdownL2 are displayed in the default
output.
On ARM, Intel ICL and later platforms (before SPR), only TopdownL1 is
displayed in the default output.

Metrics have a field where the groups they belong to are listed like
the following from
tools/perf/pmu-events/arch/x86/skylakex/skx-metrics.json:
"MetricGroup": "PGO;TmaL1;TopdownL1;tma_L1_group",
"MetricName": "tma_frontend_bound",
The metric groups are shown in 'perf list' like the following where
TopdownL1 is a metric group:
TopdownL1:
tma_backend_bound
[This category represents fraction of slots where no uops are being
delivered due to a lack of required resources for accepting new uops
in the Backend]
tma_bad_speculation
[This category represents fraction of slots wasted due to incorrect
speculations]
tma_frontend_bound
[This category represents fraction of slots where the processor's
Frontend undersupplies its Backend]
tma_retiring
[This category represents fraction of slots utilized by useful work
i.e. issued uops that eventually get retired]
This patch adds support for a new json file in each model directory
called metricgroups.json that comprises a dictionary containing
entries that map from a metric group to a description:
{
...
"TopdownL1": "Metrics for top-down breakdown at level 1",
...
}
perf list is then updated to support this changing the above output
to:
TopdownL1: [Metrics for top-down breakdown at level 1]

Some metric groups have metrics that don't have fully overlapping
events, meaning that the group's events become unique event groups that
may need to multiplex with each other. This can be particularly
unfortunate when the groups wouldn't need to multiplex because there are
sufficient hardware counters.
Add a flag so that if recording a metric group then the metrics within
the group needn't use groups for their events. The flag is added to
Intel TopdownL1 and TopdownL2 metrics.

Without this, pmu-events.c would be generated with variations in
ordering depending on non-deterministic filesystem readdir order.
I tested that pmu-events.c still has the same number of lines and that
perf list output works.
This patch was done while working on reproducible builds for openSUSE,
but also solves issues in Debian [1] and other distributions.

Parse the metric threshold and add to the pmu-events.c file. The
metric isn't parsed as the parser uses python's parser and will break
the operator precedence.

Encoding enums like '1\0' wastes a byte and could be '1' (no '\0'
terminator) if the 0 case is '0', it also removes a branch for

Rename metric_constraint to event_grouping to better explain what the
variable is used for. Switch to use an enum for encoding instead of a
string. Rather than just no constraint/grouping information or
"NO_NMI_WATCHDOG", have 4 enum values. The values encode whether to
group or not, and two cases where the behavior is dependent on either
the NMI watchdog being enabled or SMT being enabled.

Turn a perf json event into an event, metric or both. This reduces the
number of events needed to scan to find an event or metric. As events
no longer need the relatively seldom used metric fields, 4 bytes is
saved per event. This reduces the big C string's size by 335kb (14.8%)
on x86.
Note, for the test PMU architecture pme_test_soc_cpu is renamed
pmu_events__test_soc_cpu for consistency with the event vs metric
naming convention.

Add a metrics table that is just a cast from pmu_events_table. This
changes the APIs so that event and metric usage of the underlying
table is different. For the no jevents case the tables are already
separate, later changes will separate the tables for the jevents case.

Previous changes separated the uses of pmu_event and pmu_metric,
however, both structures contained all the variables of event and
metric. This change removes the event variables from metric and the
metric variables from event.
Note, this change removes the setting of evsel's metric_name/expr as
these fields are no longer part of struct pmu_event. The metric
remains but is no longer implicitly requested when the event is. This
impacts a few Intel uncore events, however, as the ScaleUnit is shared
by the event and the metric this utility is questionable. Also the
MetricNames look broken (contain spaces) in some cases and when trying
to use the functionality with '-e' the metrics fail but regular
metrics with '-M' work. For example, on SkylakeX '-M' works:
```
$ perf stat -M LLC_MISSES.PCIE_WRITE -a sleep 1
Performance counter stats for 'system wide':
0 UNC_IIO_DATA_REQ_OF_CPU.MEM_WRITE.PART2 # 57896.0 Bytes LLC_MISSES.PCIE_WRITE (49.84%)
7,174 UNC_IIO_DATA_REQ_OF_CPU.MEM_WRITE.PART1 (49.85%)
63 UNC_IIO_DATA_REQ_OF_CPU.MEM_WRITE.PART0 (50.15%)
1.004576381 seconds time elapsed
```
whilst the event '-e' version is broken even with --group/-g (fwiw, we should also remove -g [1]):
```
$ perf stat -g -e LLC_MISSES.PCIE_WRITE -g -a sleep 1
Add UNC_IIO_DATA_REQ_OF_CPU.MEM_WRITE.PART2 event to groups to get metric expression for LLC_MISSES.PCIE_WRITE
The code also carries warnings where the user is supposed to select
events for metrics [2] but given the lack of use of such a feature,
let's clean the code and just remove.
Create a new pmu_metric for the metric related variables from pmu_event
but that is initially just a clone of pmu_event. Add iterators for
pmu_metric and use in places that metrics are desired rather than
events. Make the event iterator skip metric only events, and the metric
iterator skip event only events.
Rewrite metrics within the same file in terms of each other. For example, on Power8
other_stall_cpi is rewritten from:
"PM_CMPLU_STALL / PM_RUN_INST_CMPL - PM_CMPLU_STALL_BRU_CRU / PM_RUN_INST_CMPL - PM_CMPLU_STALL_FXU / PM_RUN_INST_CMPL - PM_CMPLU_STALL_VSU / PM_RUN_INST_CMPL - PM_CMPLU_STALL_LSU / PM_RUN_INST_CMPL - PM_CMPLU_STALL_NTCG_FLUSH / PM_RUN_INST_CMPL - PM_CMPLU_STALL_NO_NTF / PM_RUN_INST_CMPL"
to:
"stall_cpi - bru_cru_stall_cpi - fxu_stall_cpi - vsu_stall_cpi - lsu_stall_cpi - ntcg_flush_cpi - no_ntf_stall_cpi"
Which more closely matches the definition on Power9.
To avoid recomputation decorate the function with a cache.
Currently the 'MetricExpr' json value is passed from the json
file to the pmu-events.c. This change introduces an expression
tree that is parsed into. The parsing is done largely by using
operator overloading and python's 'eval' function. Two advantages
in doing this are:
1) Broken metrics fail at compile time rather than relying on
`perf test` to detect. `perf test` remains relevant for checking
event encoding and actual metric use.
2) The conversion to a string from the tree can minimize the metric's
string size, for example, preferring 1e6 over 1000000, avoiding
multiplication by 1 and removing unnecessary whitespace. On x86
this reduces the string size by 2,930bytes (0.07%).
In future changes it would be possible to programmatically
generate the json expressions (a single line of text and so a
pain to write manually) for an architecture using the expression
tree. This could avoid copy-pasting metrics for all architecture
variants.
v4. Doesn't simplify "0*SLOTS" to 0, as the pattern is used to fix
Intel metrics with topdown events.
v3. Avoids generic types on standard types like set that aren't
supported until Python 3.9, fixing an issue with Python 3.6
reported-by John Garry. v3 also fixes minor pylint issues and adds
a call to Simplify on the read expression tree.
v2. Improvements to type information.
Committer notes:
If a shorter string ends a longer string then the shorter string may
reuse the longer string at an offset. For example, on x86 the event
arith.cycles_div_busy and cycles_div_busy can be folded, even though
they have difference names the strings are identical after 6
characters. cycles_div_busy can reuse the arith.cycles_div_busy string
at an offset of 6.
In pmu-events.c this looks like the following where the 'also:' lists
folded strings:
/* offset=177541 */ "arith.cycles_div_busy\000\000pipeline\000Cycles the divider is busy\000\000\000event=0x14,period=2000000,umask=0x1\000\000\000\000\000\000\000\000\000" /* also: cycles_div_busy\000\000pipeline\000Cycles the divider is busy\000\000\000event=0x14,period=2000000,umask=0x1\000\000\000\000\000\000\000\000\000 */
As jevents.py combines multiple strings for an event into a larger
string, the amount of folding is minimal as all parts of the event must
align. Other organizations can benefit more from folding, but lose space
by say recording more offsets.
The pmu_events array requires 15 pointers per entry which in position
independent code need relocating. Change the array to be an array of
offsets within a big C string. Only the offset of the first variable is
required, subsequent variables are stored in order after the \0
terminator (requiring a byte per variable rather than 4 bytes per
offset).
The file size savings are:
no jevents - the same 19,788,464bytes
x86 jevents - ~16.7% file size saving 23,744,288bytes vs 28,502,632bytes
all jevents - ~19.5% file size saving 24,469,056bytes vs 30,379,920bytes
default build options plus NO_LIBBFD=1.
For example, the x86 build savings come from .rela.dyn and
.data.rel.ro becoming smaller by 3,157,032bytes and 3,042,016bytes
respectively. .rodata increases by 1,432,448bytes, giving an overall
4,766,600bytes saving.
To make metric strings more shareable, the topic is changed from say
'skx metrics' to just 'metrics'.
To try to help with the memory layout the pmu_events are ordered as used
by perf qsort comparator functions.
The current code assumes that a struct pmu_event can be iterated over
forward until a NULL pmu_event is encountered.
This makes it difficult to refactor pmu_event.
Add a loop function taking a callback function that's passed the struct
pmu_event.
This way the pmu_event is only needed for one element and not an entire
array.
Switch existing code iterating over the pmu_event arrays to use the new
loop function pmu_events_table_for_each_event.
