The script is mostly equivalent to 'mkdir -p' and 'ln -sfr'.
Let's replace it with install_emptydir() builtin function and
inline meson call.

The name "def.h" originates from before the rule of "no needless abbreviations"
was established. Let's rename the file to clarify that it contains a collection
of various semi-related constants.

I want to tweak behaviour further, and that'll be easier when "style"
is converted to a bitfield.
Some callers used ESCAPE_BACKSLASH_ONELINE, and others not. But the
ones that didn't, simply didn't care, because the argument was assumed to
be one-line anyway (e.g. a service name). In environment-generator, this
could make a difference. But I think it's better to escape the newlines
there too. So newlines are now always escaped, to simplify the code and
the test matrix.

With some versions of the compiler, the _cleanup_ attr makes it think
the variable might be freed/closed when uninitialized, even though it
cannot happen. The added cost is small enough to be worth the benefit,
and optimized builds will help reduce it even further.

I think the two names were both pretty bad. They did not give a proper hint
what the difference between the two functions is, and sd_path_home sounds like
it is somehow related to /home or home directories or whatever, when in fact
both functions return the same set of paths as either a colon-delimited string
or a strv. "_strv" suffix is used by various functions in sd-bus, so let's
reuse that.
Those functions are not public yet, so let's rename.

Those codepaths is only used by that generator, so simply adding a few debug
log lines should be OK.

So far we put such functinos in install.[ch], but that is tied too closely
to enable/disable. Let's start moving things to a place with a better name.

This makes the code match documentation (opposite compared to previous
commits). This is user configuration, hence it should not depend on stuff
in /lib/ even when split-usr is used.

It's quite complex, let's split this out.
No code changes, just some file rearranging.

Let's unify an beautify our remaining copyright statements, with a
unicode ©. This means our copyright statements are now always formatted
the same way. Yay.

This part of the copyright blurb stems from the GPL use recommendations:
https://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-howto.en.html
The concept appears to originate in times where version control was per
file, instead of per tree, and was a way to glue the files together.
Ultimately, we nowadays don't live in that world anymore, and this
information is entirely useless anyway, as people are very welcome to
copy these files into any projects they like, and they shouldn't have to
change bits that are part of our copyright header for that.
hence, let's just get rid of this old cruft, and shorten our codebase a
bit.

Files which are installed as-is (any .service and other unit files, .conf
files, .policy files, etc), are left as is. My assumption is that SPDX
identifiers are not yet that well known, so it's better to retain the
extended header to avoid any doubt.
I also kept any copyright lines. We can probably remove them, but it'd nice to
obtain explicit acks from all involved authors before doing that.

This macro will read a pointer of any type, return it, and set the
pointer to NULL. This is useful as an explicit concept of passing
ownership of a memory area between pointers.
This takes inspiration from Rust:
https://doc.rust-lang.org/std/option/enum.Option.html#method.take
and was suggested by Alan Jenkins (@sourcejedi).
It drops ~160 lines of code from our codebase, which makes me like it.
Also, I think it clarifies passing of ownership, and thus helps
readability a bit (at least for the initiated who know the new macro)

Also called "ANSI-C Quoting" in info:(bash) ANSI-C Quoting.
The escaping rules are a POSIX proposal, and are described in
http://austingroupbugs.net/view.php?id=249. There's a lot of back-and-forth on
the details of escaping of control characters, but we'll be only using a small
subset of the syntax that is common to all proposals and is widely supported.
Unfortunately dash and fish and maybe some other shells do not support it (see
the man page patch for a list).
This allows environment variables to be safely exported using show-environment
and imported into the shell. Shells which do not support this syntax will have
to do something like
export $(systemctl show-environment|grep -v '=\$')
or whatever is appropriate in their case. I think csh and fish do not support
the A=B syntax anyway, so the change is moot for them.
Fixes #5536.
v2:
- also escape newlines (which currently disallowed in shell values, so this
doesn't really matter), and tabs (as $'\t'), and ! (as $'!'). This way quoted
output can be included directly in both interactive and noninteractive bash.

Why the strange name: the prefix is necessary to follow our own advice that
environment generators should have numerical prefixes. I also put -d- in the
name because otherwise the name was very easy to mistake with
systemd.environment-generator. This additional letter clarifies that this
on special generator that supports environment.d files.
