On ARM the cpuid is dependent on the core type of the CPU in
question. The PMU was passed for the sake of the CPU map but this
means in places a temporary PMU is created just to pass a CPU
value. Just pass the CPU and fix up the callers.
As there are no longer PMU users in header.h, shuffle forward
declarations earlier to work around build failures.

The first version's metadata header structure doesn't include a field to
indicate a header version, which is not friendly for extension.
Define the metadata version 2 format with a new header structure and
extend per CPU's metadata. In the meantime, the old metadata header will
still be supported for backward compatibility.

"evsel->pmu_name" is only ever assigned a strdup of "pmu->name", a
strdup of "evsel->pmu_name" or NULL. As such, prefer to use
"pmu->name" directly and even to directly compare PMUs than PMU
names. For safety, add some additional NULL tests.

iterate the CPU map. Similarly make use of the intersect function
taking care for when "any" CPU is specified. Switch
perf_cpu_map__has_any_cpu_or_is_empty() to more appropriate

perf_cpu_map__has_any_cpu_or_is_empty()
The name perf_cpu_map_empty is misleading as true is also returned
when the map contains an "any" CPU (aka dummy) map.
Rename to perf_cpu_map__has_any_cpu_or_is_empty(), later changes will
(re)introduce perf_cpu_map__empty() and perf_cpu_map__has_any_cpu().

The default config is computed during creation of the PMU and may do
things like scanning sysfs, when the PMU may just be used as part of
scanning. Change default_config to perf_event_attr_init_default, a
callback that is used when a default config needs initializing. This
avoids holding onto the memory for a perf_event_attr and copying.
On a tigerlake laptop running the pmu-scan benchmark:
Before:
Running 'internals/pmu-scan' benchmark:
Computing performance of sysfs PMU event scan for 100 times
Average core PMU scanning took: 28.780 usec (+- 0.503 usec)
Average PMU scanning took: 283.480 usec (+- 18.471 usec)
Number of openat syscalls: 30,227
After:
Running 'internals/pmu-scan' benchmark:
Computing performance of sysfs PMU event scan for 100 times
Average core PMU scanning took: 27.880 usec (+- 0.169 usec)
Average PMU scanning took: 245.260 usec (+- 15.758 usec)
Number of openat syscalls: 28,914
Over 3 runs it is a nearly 12% reduction in execution time and a 4.3%
of openat calls.

Since commit bb30acae4c4dacfa ("perf report: Bail out --mem-mode if mem
info is not available") "perf mem report" and "perf report --mem-mode"
don't allow opening the file unless one of the events has
PERF_SAMPLE_DATA_SRC set.
SPE doesn't have this set even though synthetic memory data is generated
after it is decoded. Fix this issue by setting DATA_SRC on SPE events.
This has no effect on the data collected because the SPE driver doesn't
do anything with that flag and doesn't generate samples.

evlist contains cpus and all_cpus. all_cpus is the union of the cpu maps
of all evsels.
For non-task targets, cpus is set to be cpus requested from the command
line, defaulting to all online cpus if no cpus are specified.
For an uncore event, all_cpus may be just CPU 0 or every online CPU.
This causes all_cpus to have fewer values than the cpus variable which
is confusing given the 'all' in the name.
To try to make the behavior clearer, rename cpus to user_requested_cpus
and add comments on the two struct variables.

When recording SPE traces, the default sample_period is currently being
set to 1 in the perf_event_attr fields, instead of the value advertised
in '/sys/devices/arm_spe_0/caps/min_interval':
Before:
$ perf record -e arm_spe// -vv -- sleep 1
[...]
{ sample_period, sample_freq } 1
[...]
Use the value from the above sysfs location as a more sensible default
(it was already being read, but the value not being used)
After:
$ perf record -e arm_spe// -vv -- sleep 1
[...]
{ sample_period, sample_freq } 1024

When perf report synthesize events from ARM SPE data, it refers to
current cpu, pid and tid in the machine. But there's no place to set
them in the ARM SPE decoder. I'm seeing all pid/tid is set to -1 and
user symbols are not resolved in the output.

we can safely set the attr.context_switch bit and use it.

The head pointer of the AUX buffer managed by the arm_spe_pmu.c driver
is not monotonically increasing, therefore the find_snapshot callback is
needed in order to find the trace data within the AUX buffer and avoid
wasting space in the perf.data file.
The pointer is assumed to have wrapped if the buffer contains non-zero
data at the end. If it has wrapped, the entire contents of the AUX
buffer are stored in the perf.data file. Otherwise only the data up to
the head pointer is stored.

The dummy event is mainly used for mmap, the TIME sample is only needed
for per-cpu case so that the perf tool can rely on the correct timing
for parsing symbols. And the CPU sample is useless for mmap.
The BRANCH_STACK sample bit will be always reset for the dummy event in
the function evsel__config(), so don't need to repeatedly reset it for
Arm SPE specific.
So this patch only enables TIME sample for per-cpu mmap.

Now it's hard code to set sample flags for CPU, TIME and TID for SPE
event, which is pointless.
The CPU is useful for sampling only for per-mmap case, it is used to
indicate the AUX trace is associated to which CPU.
The TIME sample is not needed for AUX event, since the time for AUX
event is not really used and this time is a different thing from the
timestamp in Arm SPE trace, the timestamp tracing which is controlled
by Arm SPE's config bit.
The TID sample is not useful for AUX event.
This patch corrects the sample flags for SPE event, it only set CPU
sample bit for per-cpu mmap case.

In __cmd_record(), when receiving SIGINT(ctrl + c), a 'done' flag will
be set and the event list will be disabled by evlist__disable() once.
While in auxtrace_record.read_finish(), the related events will be
enabled again, if they are continuous, the recording seems to be
endless.

We need the 'page_size' variable in libperf, so move it there.
Add a libperf_init() as a global libperf init function to obtain this
value via sysconf() at tool start.
Committer notes:
Add internal/lib.h to tools/perf/ files using 'page_size', sometimes
replacing util.h with it if that was the only reason for having util.h
included.

Move the perf_event_attr struct fron 'struct evsel' to 'struct perf_evsel'.
Committer notes:
Fixed up these:
tools/perf/arch/arm/util/auxtrace.c
tools/perf/arch/arm/util/cs-etm.c
tools/perf/arch/arm64/util/arm-spe.c
tools/perf/arch/s390/util/auxtrace.c
tools/perf/util/cs-etm.c
Also
cc1: warnings being treated as errors
tests/sample-parsing.c: In function 'do_test':
tests/sample-parsing.c:162: error: missing initializer
tests/sample-parsing.c:162: error: (near initialization for 'evsel.core.cpus')
struct evsel evsel = {
.needs_swap = false,
- .core.attr = {
- .sample_type = sample_type,
- .read_format = read_format,
+ .core = {
+ . attr = {
+ .sample_type = sample_type,
+ .read_format = read_format,
+ },
[perfbuilder@a70e4eeb5549 /]$ gcc --version |& head -1
gcc (GCC) 4.4.7
Also we don't need to include perf_event.h in
tools/perf/lib/include/perf/evsel.h, forward declaring 'struct
perf_event_attr' is enough. And this even fixes the build in some
systems where things are used somewhere down the include path from
perf_event.h without defining __always_inline.

The auxtrace init variable 'err' was not being initialized, leading perf
to abort early in an SPE record command when there was no explicit
error, rather only based whatever memory contents were on the stack.
Initialize it explicitly on getting an SPE successfully, the same way
cs-etm does.

'perf record' and 'perf report --dump-raw-trace' supported in this
release.
Example usage:
# perf record -e arm_spe/ts_enable=1,pa_enable=1/ dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/null count=10000
# perf report --dump-raw-trace
Note that the perf.data file is portable, so the report can be run on
another architecture host if necessary.
Output will contain raw SPE data and its textual representation, such
as:
0x5c8 [0x30]: PERF_RECORD_AUXTRACE size: 0x200000 offset: 0 ref: 0x1891ad0e idx: 1 tid: 2227 cpu: 1

Other release notes:
- applies to acme's perf/{core,urgent} branches, likely elsewhere
- Report is self-contained within the tool.
Record requires enabling the kernel SPE driver by
setting CONFIG_ARM_SPE_PMU.
- The intel-bts implementation was used as a starting point; its
min/default/max buffer sizes and power of 2 pages granularity need to be
revisited for ARM SPE
- Recording across multiple SPE clusters/domains not supported
- Snapshot support (record -S), and conversion to native perf events
(e.g., via 'perf inject --itrace'), are also not supported
- Technically both cs-etm and spe can be used simultaneously, however
disabled for simplicity in this release
